Peak Energy

Job Title: Field Engineer

Location: Burlingame, California

Department: ESS Engineering

Reports To: Field Project Engineering Lead

Position Type: Full-time

About the Company

Peak Energy is the first American venture to advance globally proven sodium-ion battery systems as the storage standard for the new era of renewable energy on a resilient grid.

Sodium-ion is cheap, readily available, and safe — making it the leading contender in a rapidly evolving market.

Our leadership team is powered by decades of expertise in scaling gigawatt-level innovation at world-class companies such as Tesla, Northvolt, Apple, Powin, Enovix, Zipline, Solid Power, SunPower, and Fluence. We are backed by strategic investment and product partners including TDK Ventures, Eclipse Ventures, and GM Ventures.

We recently announced America's first sodium-ion grid storage factory in Sacramento with production starting Q1 2027, and over $1B in signed customer commitments including Jupiter Power and Energy Vault.

About the Role - Field Engineer

The Field Engineer owns hands-on execution at the site level — installing, commissioning, and troubleshooting energy storage systems from first-of-a-kind pilots through scaled BESS deployments.

As Peak Energy scales from pilot to gigawatt-level deployment, we need engineers on the ground who can turn designs into working, serviceable systems and catch issues before they become field failures.

You'll work day-to-day alongside design engineers, the Project Engineering team, technicians, and contractors, feeding what you learn in the field back into better designs and repeatable processes. You'll also interface directly with customers during commissioning and service events.

This role suits someone who's happiest with a multimeter in hand, values deep technical ownership over polish or hierarchy, and is energized by solving problems on-site rather than managing them from a distance.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

Site Execution & Design Feedback

  • Work closely with design engineers to ensure designs are practical in the field and support long-term service.
  • Troubleshoot field issues, run diagnostics, and feed structured learnings back into design and manufacturing.
  • Perform basic electrical calculations (current flow, voltage drop) to confirm safe, efficient site infrastructure.
  • Support the Project Development team during installation as needed or requested.

Maintenance & Reliability Programs

  • Build out preventative and reactive maintenance routines and procedures.
  • Contribute to service and maintenance planning for long-term fleet reliability.
  • Build the deployment playbook: procedures, troubleshooting guides, commissioning workflows, and service tools.

Documentation

  • Maintain up-to-date service and troubleshooting manuals.
  • Maintain effective document change control across all cross-functional teams.

Tooling, Inventory & Budget Management

  • Manage the budget for travel, tools, contracted services, and spare parts.
  • Build out a spare parts inventory management program, including maintaining and servicing stored parts and planning logistics to ensure parts availability.
  • Ensure field tooling meets all safety standards and provide feedback to the engineering team on usability and reliability improvements.

Training & Technical Support

  • Train field technicians and provide technical escalation support during deployments.

What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

  • Strong hands-on electrical experience—background as an electrician, electrical technician, or test engineer preferred.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, calculate electrical loads, and collaborate with design and field engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical troubleshooting; background in batteries, power electronics, or related systems is a plus.
  • Experience in field deployment or operations roles supporting hardware rollouts or energy systems.
  • Familiarity with fleet operations, facilities project management, and site coordination.
  • Comfortable running multiple projects at once in fast-moving, resource-constrained environments.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to document clear procedures and train others.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time and stay on-site for extended periods as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications: OSHA, PMP, Journeyman Electrician License, or similar.
  • Experience working in an early-stage or fast-growth tech environment.
  • Familiarity with service contracts, commissioning protocols, and vendor agreements.
  • Familiarity with Python and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP, or similar, is a plus.
