Job Overview:

The Student Success Coach plays a pivotal role in empowering middle and high school students to navigate their academic, personal, and career readiness pathways. The Success Coach focuses on fostering student autonomy, self-advocacy, and executive functioning. Managing a dedicated caseload, the Coach serves as a strategic mentor, partner, and advocate, ensuring every student has universal access to the tools and opportunities needed to thrive.

1. Direct Student Coaching & Caseload Management:

  • Caseload Oversight: Actively manage and support a dedicated caseload of approximately 5-10 students, tracking their overall well-being, engagement, and progress.

  • Consistent Engagement: Meet with students weekly (either in-person or virtually) to co-create actionable goals, build rapport, and review academic and personal milestones.
  • Framework Fidelity: Conduct all coaching sessions in strict alignment with established SHP guidelines, utilizing asset-based framework models to encourage student self-reflection and problem-solving.
  • Executive Functioning Support: Guide students in developing critical foundational skills, including time management, study strategies, organization, and navigating educational transitions.
     

2. Holistic Student Support & Workshop Facilitation:

  • Academic Intervention: Provide targeted academic support when needed, helping students navigate challenges and connect to broader resources.

  • Program Integration: Attend scheduled programming days whenever possible to integrate into the broader community culture and support community-centered student initiatives.
     

3. Documentation, Communication & Safety:

  • Meticulous Documentation: Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential digital logs to document all coaching sessions, goals, and intervention strategies.

  • Family Partnership: Communicate proactively with families each quarter to touch base, share updates, and gain valuable perspectives on evolving student needs and external support systems.
  • Escalation & Safety: Promptly identify and report any "red flags" or high-priority student concerns to the Site Supervisor to ensure immediate, coordinated follow-up.
     

4. Professional Development:

  • Continuous Learning: Attend and actively participate in all mandatory training sessions, professional learning communities, and onboarding to align coaching methodologies with organizational standards.

Required Qualifications & Core Competencies:

  • Asset-Based Mindset: A deep, genuine belief in the potential of all youth and a commitment to expanding universal access to opportunities.
  • Relationship-Driven: Demonstrated ability to build authentic, trusting relationships with diverse youth populations and meet them where they are.
  • Strong Communication & Oracy: Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a specific emphasis on active listening and the ability to facilitate meaningful dialogue with both students and families.
  • Organization & Autonomy: Exceptional time-management skills necessary to manage a student caseload independently while maintaining high standards of documentation.
  • Relevant Experience: Prior experience in youth development, mentoring, education, out-of-school-time programming, or related fields.

Reporting & Structure:

  • Department: Center for Community Partnerships / Starr Hill Pathways
  • Reports To: Site Supervisor and Student Success Program Manager
  • Schedule/Format: Hybrid (In-person programming/coaching and virtual touchpoints as designated)
  • In addition to the job duties and responsibilities outlined above, this position will participate in a structured internship experience through the Internship Placement Program (IPP). If selected, interns must enroll in either UNST 3910 (1 cr.) or UNST 3920 (1 cr.). The courses are offered 9+ times during the fall, offering plenty of options to choose from. If the course does not work for your schedule, we also offer an asynchronous co-curricular workshop series through Canvas. Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests. The FWS Internship will look great on your resume and provide the student with impactful stories to share in interviews. TFWS Internships are best suited for students in their 2nd – 4th years.

Compensation: $18/hr.

Scheduled hours: Flexible work between 9:00am - 4:00pm. Monday - Friday.

Education: Current federal work study eligible UVA undergraduate and graduate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
