Fixed term Contract until end of August 2027
Role can be located in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch
Help power the technology that supports New Zealand exporters globally
At New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), our purpose is to grow companies internationally – bigger, better, faster – for the good of New Zealand. Technology plays a critical role in helping us achieve that purpose.
We're looking for an experienced Enterprise Systems Engineer - Cloud to help shape, secure and evolve our Microsoft Azure and M365 environments. This is a cloud engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, influencing technology direction and delivering practical solutions that enable the business.
What you'll be doing
As part of a team of six, you'll act as a key Azure SME, contributing to operational excellence, major incident resolution, cloud architecture, roadmap development and technology enablement across NZTE.
- Manage and optimise NZTE's Azure environment through automation, monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Lead the investigation and resolution of complex cloud and infrastructure issues, including major incidents escalated from the Service Desk.
- Produce designs and steer implementation of secure, scalable and cost-effective cloud solutions.
- Contribute to cloud roadmaps, architecture decisions and future technology planning.
- Support business and technology projects with key M365 and Azure engineering, security and infrastructure expertise.
- Maintain and improve cloud networking and security services, including VNETs, NSGs, WAFs and Container App Environments.
- Work closely with vendors, technical teams and business stakeholders to deliver effective outcomes.
What you'll bring
- 5+ years' experience in Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering or a similar role.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong M365 and Azure experience within a medium to large enterprise environment.
- Azure certifications, ideally including AZ-104 alongside any security certifications would be highly regarded.
- Experience across Azure infrastructure, networking, identity, governance and security.
- Strong knowledge of cloud security, IAM, Entra ID, Conditional Access, RBAC and Privileged Identity Management (PIM).
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation, including Bicep, Terraform, Azure CLI and PowerShell.
- The ability to analyse complex technical issues, identify root causes and deliver practical solutions.
You'll know your Availability Zones from your Region Pairs, understand when to use service principals and managed identities, and recognise that the best solution balances security, availability, functionality and cost.
Importantly, this is not a first-line Service Desk role. We're looking for a proactive cloud engineer who can provide technical leadership, shape future platforms and act as a trusted Azure SME for NZTE.
