Posting Start Date:
Job Description:
Eight months in total, comprising the first four months with the Production Operations team, followed by four months with the Maintenance, Turnaround and Construction (MTAC) team.
The intern will complete a structured rotation, beginning with Production Operations and followed by MTAC, to gain practical exposure to day-to-day offshore and onshore oil and gas operations, engineering support, instrumentation and control, maintenance, and reliability within Sabah Deepwater.
The rotation is intended to help the intern understand how Operations and Engineering work together to support safe, reliable, and efficient asset performance.
Rotation 1: Production Operations Attachment
Duration: Four months
The intern will:
· Gain familiarity with the Sabah Deepwater oil and gas business, including the topside process flow for GK FPS and MLK TLP.
· Understand the roles and responsibilities within Production Operations, including Operations Engineer, Production Services Engineer, Integrated Activity Planning, Hydrocarbon Accounting, Business Controller, Tanker Planner, and Operations Management Committee interfaces.
· Gain exposure to interfaces with relevant external parties, including SOGT, KBB, and MPM.
· Understand relevant SEAM standard processes and interfaces, including ESP, MTO, MAC, MSC, IAP, FPP, EQP, and Management of Change or deviation processes.
· Understand selected Shell Graduate Programme assignments and training relevant to Production Operations, HSSE leadership, and the MTAC skill pool.
· Identify and support improvement initiatives and gap-closure activities through observation, data review, and engagement with the team.
Rotation 2: MTAC Engineering Attachment
Duration: Four months
The intern will support Process Automation, Control and Optimization (PACO), Instrumentation and Control Engineering activities within MTAC.
The intern will:
· Support the review and verification of instrumentation and control system documentation, including P&IDs, loop drawings, cause and effect charts, and instrument datasheets.
· Assist in monitoring and analyzing instrument reliability, bad actor equipment, and maintenance performance data.
· Participate in alarm management activities, including alarm rationalization, alarm performance monitoring, and reporting.
· Support control system performance reviews and optimization initiatives to improve plant reliability and operational efficiency.
· Assist engineers in troubleshooting instrumentation and control system issues and documenting the findings.
· Participate in field verification, site visits, and equipment condition assessments, where applicable.
· Support the development and updating of engineering databases, maintenance records, and technical reports.
· Contribute to improvement initiatives related to instrumentation, process control, digitalization, and automation.
Overall Deliverables
The intern will be expected to:
· Complete agreed tasks or improvement assignments for each rotation under the guidance of the assigned supervisors.
· Maintain a learning record covering key activities, observations, and technical or operational learning.
· Prepare a final report and presentation summarizing learning outcomes, assigned projects, observations, and recommendations across both rotations.
Goals and objectives
The objective of this 8-month internship is to provide the intern with an integrated understanding of the end-to-end oil and gas value chain and how MTAC engineering and Production Operations work together to support the safe, reliable, and competitive delivery of hydrocarbons from Sabah Deepwater assets.
Through the MTAC rotation, the intern is expected to build foundational knowledge in instrumentation, process control, automation, maintenance, reliability, engineering documentation, technical troubleshooting, and performance improvement. Through the Production Operations rotation, the intern is expected to understand topside process flow, operational roles, standard work processes,
stakeholder interfaces, safe working practices, and the contribution of operations to asset and business performance.
By the end of the internship, the intern should be able to:
• Explain the key interfaces between engineering, maintenance, and operations in supporting asset performance.
• Interpret basic engineering drawings and technical documentation relevant to instrumentation, control, and production operations.
• Apply structured analytical, problem-solving, and technical reporting skills to assigned tasks.
• Demonstrate awareness of HSSE, process safety, risk management, asset integrity, governance, and assurance requirements.
• Communicate observations and recommendations clearly through written reports and presentations.
• Appreciate how people, processes, technology, and governance come together to deliver safe production and business value.
