Purpose

The Start-Up Engineer is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and successful commissioning and start-up of Air Products ASU facilities, ensuring systems are tested, operational requirements are achieved, and projects are transitioned effectively from construction to operations. The role collaborates closely with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, and project teams to deliver project objectives while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.

Nature & Scope

• Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and facility handover activities.
• Coordinate with engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure readiness for start-up.
• Facilitate system turnover, punch-list management, and operational acceptance processes.
• Validate plant performance against design and operational requirements.
• Identify and resolve technical and operational issues during commissioning and start-up.
• Support development and execution of commissioning procedures, test plans, and operating instructions.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and capture lessons learned.
• Work across functional teams and support multiple project phases.
• Provide technical guidance during commissioning and start-up execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate assigned commissioning and start-up activities in accordance with approved procedures.
• Verify mechanical completion and system readiness prior to energization and operation.
• Execute functional testing, loop checks, performance tests, and operational validation activities.
• Monitor plant systems during start-up and recommend corrective actions when required.
• Collaborate with operations personnel to support smooth transition to commercial operation.
• Review engineering documentation, P&IDs, procedures, and test records to ensure readiness.
• Participate in risk assessments, HAZOP actions, pre-startup safety reviews, and operational readiness reviews.
• Track commissioning progress and communication status, risks, and mitigation actions.
• Support training activities for plant operators and operations teams.
• Document start-up results, lessons learned, and turnover records for project closeout.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
• Minimum 12 years’ Experience supporting industrial projects, commissioning, operations, maintenance, or plant start-up activities.
• Working knowledge of industrial processes, equipment, control systems, and plant operations.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
• Effective communication and coordination skills in multidisciplinary environments.
• Ability to work in construction, commissioning, and operating plant environments.

Preferred

• Experience with air separation units (ASU), Process plants or related industrial facilities.
• Experience in project execution, commissioning, and start-up of Mid to large capital projects.
• Familiarity with DCS, PLC, and process control systems.
• Knowledge of operational readiness and system turnover processes.
• International or multi-site project experience.

Licenses / Certifications

• Commissioning, project management, or relevant technical certifications preferred.
• Site-specific permits and qualifications as required.

• Regular full-time schedule with flexibility to support project execution requirements.
• Extended hours, shift work, weekends, or holidays may be required during critical commissioning and start-up phases.
• Availability to support site activities during plant start-up periods.

Travel

• Frequent domestic and international travel as required by project assignments.
• Extended site assignments may be required during commissioning and start-up activities.
