About this Engineer, IT Network role at Nexstar Media Group

Nexstar Media Group · Onsite · NC, Charlotte

The IT Systems & Network Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day support, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of information technology and related broadcast systems within the facility.

This is a hands-on technical position with a strong emphasis on end-user support, hardware break/fix, Microsoft technologies, network connectivity, and general IT infrastructure support. The position also works closely with the station’s Engineering team and supports technology used in newsroom, production, and broadcast operations.

The ideal candidate is a well-rounded IT professional who is comfortable troubleshooting everything from an end-user issue or hardware failure to a network switch, server, Microsoft 365 issue, or specialized broadcast-connected system.

Broadcast television experience is beneficial but is not required for a candidate with a strong IT foundation and the ability and desire to learn broadcast technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on end-user technical support and hardware/software break-fix support throughout the organization.
  • Configure, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows workstations and laptops.
  • Support Microsoft 365 applications and services, including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Office applications.
  • Support Microsoft Intune endpoint management and on-premises Active Directory.
  • Support Windows Server environments, including basic administration, troubleshooting, patching, file services, permissions, and general server operations.
  • Troubleshoot TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLAN, Ethernet, wireless, and general network connectivity issues.
  • Perform basic configuration and troubleshooting of Cisco IOS network switches, including:
    • Switchport configuration
    • Access VLAN assignments
    • Interface status and error troubleshooting
    • Basic configuration review and validation
    • Common Cisco IOS show and configuration commands
  • Provide basic troubleshooting and support within environments containing Juniper network equipment. Deep Juniper engineering expertise is not required, but familiarity with Juniper networking concepts or the ability to work within a mixed-vendor environment is preferred.
  • Support cloud-based Webex Calling / VoIP systems, including phones, user configuration, basic troubleshooting, and connectivity issues.
  • Support physical network connectivity, patch panels, structured cabling, fiber connections, RJ45 cabling, and related infrastructure.
  • Maintain appropriate security, access controls, system configuration, endpoint protection, and data privacy practices.
  • Document system configurations, troubleshooting procedures, equipment changes, and technical solutions.
  • Manage and maintain the organization's IT service management/ticketing system and associated support workflows.
  • Work closely with Engineering, News, Production, Sales, and other departments to identify technology requirements and resolve operational issues.
  • Support specialized broadcast technology with assistance from Engineering staff and vendors as appropriate.
  • Read and interpret technical documentation, network diagrams, equipment manuals, and basic schematic drawings.
  • Assist vendors and other technical personnel with troubleshooting, installation, upgrades, and system maintenance.
  • Participate in planned maintenance, system upgrades, technology deployments, and infrastructure projects.
  • Respond to system outages and critical technology issues when required.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or extended hours for maintenance, upgrades, outages, major events, or other operational requirements.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong hands-on hardware troubleshooting and break/fix skills.
  • Strong Windows desktop and end-user support experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 / Office 365.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Windows environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Intune and on-premises Active Directory.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, Ethernet, and network troubleshooting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems methodically.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple technical issues in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Ability to independently research problems, learn unfamiliar technologies, and work with vendors or other technical resources when necessary.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, move, and position equipment weighing 50 pounds or more as required.

Preferred Technical Qualifications

Industry certifications are strongly preferred and may include:

  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Server+
  • Microsoft certifications related to Microsoft 365, Windows, Endpoint Management, Intune, Azure, or related technologies
  • Cisco certifications or equivalent Cisco networking experience

Equivalent hands-on professional experience may be considered in place of certifications.

Additional preferred experience includes:

  • Microsoft Intune
  • Active Directory
  • Windows Server
  • Microsoft 365 administration
  • Webex Calling / cloud-based VoIP
  • Cisco IOS switching
  • Juniper networking environments
  • Virtualization technologies
  • Server and storage hardware
  • IT service management / ticketing platforms
  • Familiarity with OBS Studio and/or vMix

Broadcast Technology Experience

Previous experience in television broadcasting, broadcast engineering, media production, newsroom technology, or similar environments is considered a plus.

Candidates are not required to be experienced broadcast engineers. A strong IT professional who has solid troubleshooting skills, understands networks and computer systems, and is willing to learn specialized broadcast technologies may be successful in this position.

Experience with broadcast automation, routing, storage, newsroom, editing, production, or related broadcast systems is beneficial.

Education and Experience

A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required.

Relevant technical certifications, military technical experience, vocational training, or demonstrated professional IT experience may substitute for formal education.

Approximately 3–5 years of hands-on IT support, systems support, network support, or related technical experience is preferred.

Experience within a television station, broadcast facility, media organization, or other 24/7 operational environment is a plus.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys hands-on troubleshooting and is comfortable working across a broad range of technologies.

A strong troubleshooting mindset, willingness to learn, good communication skills, and a “can do” attitude are more important than being an expert in every technology used within the facility.
