About this Electrical Engineering Associate, Energy Storage role at Redwood Materials
About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
Position Summary:
The Electrical Engineering Associate, Energy Storage supports Redwood's next-generation Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) program by performing hands-on technical tasks. This is a fully on-site role at 2800 Lockheed Way, Carson City. You will perform a broad variety of hands-on technical tasks in support of Redwood’s next-generation Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). In this role, you will primarily work with engineers to create sophisticated printed circuit board (PCB) designs using software tools and use your technical abilities to build, test, and fix PCB prototypes. Additional responsibilities include management of an electronics laboratory, installing and running tests on power equipment in the field, assisting mechanical engineers, and a variety of miscellaneous technical tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and manage a library of electronics component symbols and footprints for PCB designs using Altium CAD software.
- Hand-soldering and rework of PCB components, including fine-pitch surface mount parts with rework station/hot air, and connectors; cable harness assembly.
- Running functional/bring-up tests on new board revisions, flashing firmware, verifying power rails. Bench-level troubleshooting of prototype and production boards down to component level.
- Managing an electronics lab, including lab equipment and tool purchasing, organization, maintenance, and cleaning. Keeping the lab organized, stocked with consumables and ESD/safety compliant.
- Setting up electrical test equipment for field testing support at outdoor project sites.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent military/technical training)
- Relevant coursework or certification in electronics fundamentals, circuit theory, or digital/analog systems
- Ability to read schematics, datasheets, and basic PCB layouts
- Familiarity with hand soldering (THT and SMT) to IPC-A-610 or IPC J-STD-001 workmanship standards, or willingness to be certified
- Basic proficiency with lab equipment: multimeter, oscilloscope, bench power supply, function generator
- Comfortable with basic hand tools and ESD-safe handling practices, as well as machinery and power equipment
- Exposure to CAD/EDA tools (Altium, KiCad, Eagle) a plus, even from coursework or personal projects
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
