Help Shape the Quality and Voice of Australia’s New Legal News Service

Are you an experienced copy editor who thrives in a fast-paced newsroom and knows how to turn complex copy into clear, compelling journalism?

Law360 Australia is looking for a Copy Editor with approximately 2 to 6 years’ professional experience to join its growing Australian newsroom. This is an exciting opportunity to work on breaking legal and business news while helping establish the editorial quality, style and reputation of a rapidly expanding publication.

You may have started your career as a journalist or reporter before moving into copy editing, or developed your editing expertise through another professional news or publishing environment. What matters most is your ability to edit accurately, exercise strong news judgement and provide constructive feedback to journalists.

About Law360 Australia

Law360, a LexisNexis company, is a leading source of legal news and analysis, covering litigation, regulation, enforcement, policy and corporate developments across industries and jurisdictions.

Following its Australian launch, Law360 Australia is building specialist coverage across Financial Services, Commercial Disputes and Corporate Practice. Its journalism is designed for lawyers, business leaders, regulators and other professionals who need timely, trusted reporting on the developments shaping Australia’s legal and commercial landscape.

This is your opportunity to join an ambitious Australian newsroom backed by the experience and resources of an established global legal journalism brand.

About the Role

As an Editor, you will play an important role in maintaining the accuracy, clarity and professionalism of Law360 Australia’s daily news coverage.

Working closely with reporters and editorial colleagues, you will edit and publish breaking news, analysis and features across complex legal, regulatory and business topics.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Editing daily news stories for accuracy, clarity, structure and readability
  • Correcting factual, grammatical, spelling and stylistic errors
  • Writing accurate, engaging headlines for a professional audience
  • Ensuring articles meet Law360’s editorial standards and house style
  • Applying sound news judgement and prioritising important breaking stories
  • Identifying and escalating potential legal, ethical or editorial risks
  • Providing clear, constructive feedback to reporters
  • Helping develop and maintain newsroom style guidance
  • Editing and publishing articles contributed by external legal experts
  • Liaising professionally with contributors and internal legal teams
  • Contributing to editorial planning and newsroom discussions
  • Collaborating with Law360 colleagues locally and internationally
  • Exploring approved tools, including generative AI, while maintaining strong human editorial judgement

The position description identifies professional news-copy editing, headline writing, factual accuracy, editorial consistency and Australian media law as central to the role.

What We’re Looking For

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Approximately 2 to 6 years’ professional copy-editing experience
  • Experience editing news copy in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong grammar, spelling, writing and headline-writing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify factual inconsistencies
  • Sound editorial and news judgement
  • The confidence to work independently and make editing decisions
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • A constructive approach to providing feedback to journalists
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent skills gained through experience

Previous experience as a journalist or reporter who has progressed into copy editing would be highly regarded. Experience editing daily legal, financial or business news is also desirable, but Law360 provides training on legal topics.

Why Join Law360 Australia?

  • Join a growing Australian newsroom at an exciting stage of its development
  • Help establish the editorial voice and quality of an expanding news service
  • Edit important stories across law, business, regulation and financial services
  • Work with experienced journalists and editors in Australia and globally
  • Be part of an organisation investing in trusted, independent journalism
  • Use your judgement and expertise in a role with genuine editorial influence
  • Explore how approved AI tools can support journalism without replacing human judgement

Working Hours and Location

This is a permanent, full-time role based preferably in Sydney, with Melbourne also considered.

The usual working hours are approximately 11am to 7pm, reflecting the newsroom’s afternoon filing schedule and evening publishing cycle. Some occasional weekend availability may be required when significant breaking news occurs.

If you are an experienced copy editor who enjoys the pace of daily news and wants to help build something new in Australian journalism, we would love to hear from you.
