About the Marketing Academy

The Marketing Academy is Pfizer’s capability-building ecosystem that strengthens marketing excellence through applied learning, curated programs, and shared standards—helping marketers deliver stronger performance and patient impact.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Capabilities & Strategic Platforms Lead, the Director sets the global agenda around the Marketer Capability ‘Modern Marketing Leadership & Decision Excellence’ (Capability 7) and owns its strategy, standards, frameworks and priority learning solutions.

The Marketer Capability Framework is the Academy’s practical guide to the seven capabilities, associated skills and AI-enabled ways of working that marketers need to learn, apply and lead across their careers. It provides a shared language for marketing excellence and aligns development, career growth and curriculum investment to the skills and behaviors that drive business and patient impact.

The Director owns the human capabilities strategy, standards, frameworks and priority learning solutions that are increasingly critical in AI-enabled work, by analyzing and prioritizing capability gaps based on insights stemming from capability survey data, stakeholder insight and external evidence and developing strategies and execution plans for all career levels.

The Director delivers through a defined network of track leads, Learning Design & Delivery colleagues, measurement partners, markets and external vendors. The scope is global.

Key Responsibilities

1. Set the leadership and decision-excellence agenda

Turn marketing and commercial leadership skills into a defensible annual agenda.

  • Use capability survey results, focus groups and stakeholder input to prioritize leadership and judgment gaps and define what will—and will not—be addressed.
  • Scan external leadership-development practice and adapt relevant approaches for marketer and commercial audiences. Build and maintain a vetted bench of external partners with relevant marketing and leadership-development expertise that can be tapped quickly when specialized capability or capacity is needed.
  • Secure senior stakeholder sponsorship for priority programming.

2. Embed Capability 7 frameworks across track curricula

Ensure Capability 7 is taught through the curricula where marketers build Capabilities 1–6, rather than as a separate framework layer.

  • Define and maintain the relevant Capability 7 frameworks—including decision quality, commercial judgment and how marketers evaluate, challenge or override AI-generated work—in partnership with the AI Lead where appropriate.
  • Partner with the track leads responsible for Capabilities 1–6 to define and embed the relevant Capability 7 frameworks within each track, including the content, application activities, delivery roles and assessment approach; track leads remain accountable for how the frameworks are taught within their curricula and learning experiences.
  • Contribute a leadership, decision-quality and commercial-judgment lens to Academy-wide curriculum standards, including how marketers evaluate, challenge and apply AI-generated work. Apply frameworks consistently and consolidate duplicate or competing leadership assets.
  • Set the leadership standard used in senior-leader programs, including Leading with a Business Ownership Mindset (LBOM), whose orchestration and delivery sit with Learning Design & Delivery.

3. Shape leadership curriculum and learning solutions

Define what is taught and hold it to a learn-apply-lead model across early-career, mid-stage and senior cohorts.

  • Specify priority learning solutions and lead or co-design flagship workshops, webinars and learning journeys, including instructional design, content development and delivery. Help shape learning solutions in priority areas such as critical thinking, data storytelling, executive communication, cross-functional orchestration, coaching and decision-making in AI-enabled workflows.
  • Create tiered Capability 7 learning solutions: partner with the Early Career team to provide content suited to early-career marketers; reach mid-level marketers through broad-based development delivered in scalable, modern formats such as webinars; and design tailored experiences such as LBOM with content calibrated to the leadership level and needs of the audience.
  • Embed AI fluency and responsible AI application as a baseline across Capability 7 curricula and learning solutions, ensuring content reflects how AI is changing marketing work, leadership expectations and human decision-making.
  • Modularize content into reusable assets that track leads and markets can adapt without rebuilding.
  • Maintain an active external-benchmarking practice and stay current on modern marketing and leadership development approaches, translating relevant innovations into the Academy’s curriculum and learning solutions.

4. Facilitate and deliver

Serve as a facilitator for commercial leadership, within agreed capacity.

  • Facilitate flagship workshops and webinars tailored to marketer and commercial workflows.
  • Co-deliver with track leads where leadership framing strengthens their content.
  • Deliver in-market capability built for country teams and senior marketers, adapting content to local context and maturity.

5. Prove capability gain

Show that leadership and judgment capability actually changes.

  • Define success measures for leadership programs, learning journeys and the integration of Capability 7 frameworks across Academy tracks, combining participation, engagement, application, learner feedback and stakeholder evidence.
  • Use capability data, audience insights and evidence of behavior change to identify priority gaps and recommend improvements to the leadership agenda, learning solutions and future investment decisions.
  • Define the assessment approach and partner with measurement, track and business teams to evaluate changes in decision quality through relevant work outputs, manager validation and other agreed evidence. Report evidence of capability gain to the Capabilities & Strategic Platforms Lead and Marketing Academy Leadership Team, and use it to iterate the agenda.
  • Contribute methods to the Academy’s wider capability-evidence approach.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience; MBA/MS with 7+ years; or PhD/PharmD with 5+ years of experience across progressively responsible commercial, marketing, capability-building, learning, or organizational-development roles.
  • Strategic diagnosis and analytical judgment. Demonstrated ability to integrate quantitative data, qualitative insight and external evidence; distinguish meaningful signals from noise; and translate findings into clear priorities and evidence-based recommendations for senior stakeholders.
  • Leadership development craft. Has designed leadership or management capability programs across workshops, journeys or cohorts, with evidence of behavior change.
  • Executive presence and facilitation. Able to facilitate, advise and challenge senior marketing and commercial leaders as a credible peer, present and defend evidence-based recommendations, and adapt a position when new evidence or business context warrants it.
  • Commercial strategy leadership. Demonstrated experience shaping or leading cross-functional commercial or marketing strategy, with a strong understanding of brand planning, decision-making, organizational trade-offs and the capabilities required to improve business performance.
  • Cross-functional orchestration. Experience partnering across Marketing, Sales, Medical, Analytics, Digital and other relevant functions to align perspectives, shape strategy and translate business needs into practical capability solutions.
  • Judgment in an AI era. Clear point of view on how human judgment, accountability and AI output interact in marketing work.
  • Matrix leadership and talent development. Demonstrated ability to influence without authority, build commitment across a global matrix, guide the work of colleagues and partners, and coach others toward meaningful business and capability outcomes.
  • Measurement of behavior change. Has defined and measured capability gain in real work, not only participation or satisfaction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pharma, life sciences or another regulated industry.
  • Experience designing programs for international or multi-market audiences.
  • Experience selecting and managing external leadership-development partners.
  • Experience coaching or advising senior leaders.
  • Fluency in AI’s role in marketing, leadership and learning design.
  • Experience leading or co-leading a complex, enterprise-scale commercial, capability or organizational initiative requiring cross-functional readiness, stakeholder alignment and coordinated execution across multiple teams or markets.

Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
