The Assistant General Counsel will retain overall accountability for the legal department operating model, process redesign strategy, AI adoption strategy, organizational design, and major transformation decisions. The Director will be expected to serve as a highly leveraged operational leader who helps implement, operationalize, support, and enable those priorities while managing the day-to-day Legal Operations & Enablement function.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Operations Leadership: Lead day-to-day operation of the Legal Operations & Enablement function, including management of legal operations processes, standards, governance frameworks, and operating routines.

  • Operational Excellence: Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, transparency, scalability, consistency, and service delivery across the MMS Legal Department.

  • Legal Technology & Systems: Lead implementation, administration, and optimization of legal technology platforms, including contract lifecycle management, e-billing, matter management, knowledge-management, reporting, and workflow tools.

  • Technology Adoption & Enablement: Partner with Legal, IT, Procurement, and business stakeholders to support technology deployment, user adoption, training, governance, and ongoing system improvement.

  • Spend Management & Vendor Oversight: Administer outside counsel and legal vendor management processes, including support for budgeting, forecasting, accrual tracking, invoice review, vendor onboarding, and spend reporting.

  • Analytics, Reporting & Business Insights: Develop, maintain, and enhance legal department dashboards, metrics, performance indicators, and operational reports to support informed decision-making.

  • Knowledge Management: Oversee management of legal templates, playbooks, guidance materials, FAQs, process documentation, and other knowledge resources that improve consistency and scalability.

  • Process Improvement: Lead and support process-improvement initiatives designed to reduce cycle times, standardize workflows, improve user experience, and promote operational discipline across the department.

  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Build strong partnerships across Legal, Compliance, Finance, Procurement, IT, Human Resources, and other functions to coordinate initiatives that impact legal operations.

  • Team Leadership: Manage and develop the Legal Operations Specialist and help build a service-oriented, data-informed, and continuous-improvement mindset within the Legal Operations & Enablement function.

  • Change Management: Support communications, training, stakeholder engagement, and implementation planning for legal operations initiatives, technology rollouts, and department-wide process changes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 12+ years of professional experience and 4+ years of management experience.

Other Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing or administering legal technology platforms, business systems, workflow tools, reporting tools, or comparable enterprise technology solutions.

  • Experience managing complex cross-functional initiatives and operational programs.

  • Experience supporting budgeting, reporting, vendor management, spend management, or business operations activities.

  • Experience managing or coordinating the work of direct reports, project teams, vendors, or cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Strong legal operations, business operations, or department administration experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and improve operational processes, systems, reports, and governance mechanisms.

  • Strong project and program management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and drive work to completion.

  • Ability to translate business and legal department needs into practical processes, workflows, reports, and technology-enabled solutions.

  • Strong analytical skills and comfort using data to identify trends, improve decision-making, and measure operational performance.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to work effectively with attorneys, legal professionals, business leaders, IT, Finance, Procurement, Compliance, and external vendors.

  • Sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and ability to work with confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a growing and evolving organization with changing priorities and some ambiguity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within an in-house legal department or legal operations function.

  • Experience implementing or supporting contract lifecycle management, e-billing, matter management, document management, dashboarding, workflow automation, or knowledge-management solutions.

  • Experience supporting legal technology or business transformation initiatives.

  • Experience developing operational reporting, dashboards, analytics, and business-performance metrics.

  • Experience supporting organizations undergoing significant business transformation, separation, integration, public-company readiness, or organizational change.
