The SPLC is seeking a Deputy Director, Civil Rights Memorial Center who is passionate about social justice! 


The Director, Civil Rights Memorial Center (CRMC) provides strategic, operational, and visionary leadership across all aspects of the CRMC. The Director is responsible for advancing the museum's mission, overseeing financial health, cultivating community relationships, leading staff, and serving as the primary ambassador to the community, partners, and the broader museum field. Provide direction and support for curatorial, educational, and public programming initiatives that reflect the museum's mission and community needs.

What You'll Do

Develop and implement a long-range strategic plan in partnership with the executive team and staff that advances the museum's mission, broadens its community impact, and supports long-term organizational growth and sustainability.

Foster an organizational culture that values inclusion, collaboration, creativity, professional excellence, and accountability, while providing the executive team with timely and accurate quarterly reports on organizational performance and progress toward strategic goals.

Serve as a compelling public spokesperson and advocate for the museum, promoting the importance of history, cultural preservation, and community engagement throughout Alabama and beyond.

Lead and support community development initiatives and annual programmatic campaigns while cultivating and stewarding relationships with community partners, civic leaders, elected officials, schools, tourism partners, and other key stakeholders.

Identify, cultivate, negotiate, and maintain strategic partnerships that strengthen the museum's programs, expand its reach, enhance its financial health, and advance its mission.

Provide leadership and support for curatorial, educational, and public programming initiatives that reflect the museum's mission and respond to the needs and interests of diverse audiences, while championing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in all exhibitions, programs, and interpretive approaches.

Ensure sound financial stewardship through the development and management of the annual operating budget, while maintaining the preservation, accessibility, and professional stewardship of the museum and its collections, and representing the museum through active participation in regional and national museum associations and affiliations.

Manage and develop a small team of staff through hiring, training, coaching, performance management, goal setting, work assignment, and regular performance evaluations.

Perform other duties as required or assigned which are within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Minimum Qualifications 

We are committed to equitable hiring practices, therefore you must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for the role. 

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience of progressive leadership experience in a museum or cultural center environment;
  • Minimum of 5 years' management experience in a museum, cultural institution, nonprofit, or related environment; and
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Compensation & Benefits

This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $101,000 annually. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Where & How You'll Work 

This role has the following work designation options: 

  • Telework: Positions designated as telework eligible may work two days (16 hours) a week from an alternative work location.
  • This role is intended to report to the Chief Strategy Officer; however, during an interim period, it will report to the Director of Alabama State Office. 

Other Special Considerations 

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
