Department

TSD Cloud & Infrastructure Platforms-BG-UK

Overview of Department

Purpose of Role

Lead Core Platform at an important point in its evolution, shaping the technology services that underpin Baillie Gifford and how they develop to support the firm’s future needs.

Core Platform brings together Networking, Platform Engineering and Platform Support. You’ll have the opportunity to bring these capabilities together around a clear and coherent strategy, working with a strong leadership team and shape how cloud, automation, AI and modern engineering practices are used to deliver secure, resilient and scalable services and products.

This is a broad leadership role spanning people, technology, product, strategy and commercial management. You will set direction and take overall accountability for Core Platform, translating wider technology priorities into clear plans and outcomes while giving Team Leaders and technical specialists the autonomy to lead within their areas. You’ll work across Baillie Gifford to balance operational reliability with strategic change, simplify and modernise our technology estate, and ensure Core Platform continues to meet the evolving needs of the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, motivate and develop the Core Platform leadership team, creating a collaborative culture with a strong sense of purpose, shared accountability and collective ownership.
  • Champion and promote the use of cloud, automation, AI and modern engineering practices across Core Platform, driving adoption where they can improve productivity, engineering effectiveness and service quality.
  • Provide line management, coaching and development for Team Leaders, setting clear expectations and empowering them to lead their teams effectively.
  • Take overall accountability for the effective provision and lifecycle management of Core Platform services, including networking, compute, cloud, on-premises infrastructure and platform support.
  • Ensure clear service and product ownership are established across Core Platform.
  • Take overall accountability for availability, resilience, recoverability and operational effectiveness, ensuring meaningful service measures and appropriate disaster-recovery and business-continuity arrangements are in place and regularly validated.
  • Contribute to and communicate the strategic direction for Core Platform, bringing individual platform strategies and roadmaps together into a coherent plan.
  • Provide leadership and direction for significant change across Core Platform, ensuring priorities, dependencies, ownership, outcomes and risks are understood and effectively managed.
  • Provide senior oversight of significant contract negotiations, renewals and procurement activities, while maintaining effective relationships with key vendors, partners, and service providers.
  • Build strong relationships with senior business and technology stakeholders, representing Core Platform in relevant technology, architecture, governance, and strategic forums.

What success looks like

  • Core Platform operates as a cohesive strategic area with clear direction, priorities and accountability, with Team Leaders empowered to lead effectively within their areas.
  • Networking, Platform Engineering, and Platform Support are aligned around a coherent strategy and roadmap that supports the firm’s wider technology priorities and future needs.
  • The technology estate becomes progressively simpler, more scalable and more resilient through well-judged investment in cloud, automation, AI and modern engineering practices.
  • Strategic change is prioritised and delivered effectively, with clear decisions around investment, dependencies, risk, capacity and sequencing across Core Platform.
  • Core Platform services remain secure, resilient, and well operated while the area continues to modernise and evolve.
  • Senior stakeholders have confidence in the direction and performance of Core Platform, with clear visibility of strategic priorities, risks, investment requirements, and progress.
  • Leadership capability continues to strengthen across Core Platform, with Team Leaders taking clear ownership for their areas and contributing collectively to the success of the wider function.

Your knowledge and experience

  • Significant experience leading technology, infrastructure or platform teams in a complex enterprise environment, including leadership of other managers or team leaders.
  • Experience taking accountability for the provision and lifecycle of business-critical technology services, with a strong understanding of availability, resilience, recoverability, capacity, security and operational effectiveness.
  • Broad understanding of infrastructure and platform technologies, including networking, compute, cloud and on-premises services, with the ability to provide informed oversight and challenge without needing to be a technical specialist in every area.
  • Experience shaping and communicating technology strategy, roadmaps and priorities, and translating strategic direction into clear outcomes for multiple teams.
  • Experience leading significant technology change and resolving competing priorities, dependencies and trade-offs across services and teams.
  • Experience establishing effective service and product ownership, governance, risk management and performance measures across a broad technology estate.
  • Commercial and financial management experience, including technology costs, consumption, software licensing, support arrangements and contract negotiations.
  • Ability to communicate technology strategy, service performance, risks, investment requirements and priorities clearly to senior technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Evidence of building leadership capability, developing people, and creating collaborative teams with clear accountability and shared ownership.

The Type of Candidate We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced technology leader who can operate effectively across a broad and evolving infrastructure and platform estate. You will be comfortable setting direction and taking accountability at an area level while giving Team Leaders and technical specialists the space and authority to lead within their own areas.

You will be able to balance operational reliability with longer-term strategy and change, make well-judged decisions where priorities compete and connect technology, service, risk, commercial and business considerations. You should be comfortable constructively challenging established approaches and driving simplification and improvement where this creates better outcomes.

The role will particularly suit someone who builds strong relationships, communicates complex issues with clarity, and develops capability in others. You will need to work across organisational boundaries, bring together different technical perspectives, and create a strong sense of shared purpose and accountability across Core Platform.
