Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Our leaders are subject matter experts!  As Decedent Services Lead, you will guide and support the Indigent Decedent Coordinators, the Decedent Services Program Coordinator, and the program supervisor within the Office of Vital Registration’s (OVR) Indigent Decedent Services (CIDS) program, partners, and vendor activity from the satellite office within the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME).  This unique and dynamic setting further promotes collaboration amongst various colleagues, industry partners, and groups that benefit the community we serve and the residents that rely upon these critical mandated services.

We Require

  • One or more years of experience in a vital records/registration, fiduciary, mortuary, or forensic science program
  • Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare, Public Health, Mortuary Science, or a related field
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check
  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire

  • Two or more years of vital records, mortuary, or customer service resolution experience
  • Two or more years of experience as a lead or supervisor
  • An Arizona Notary Public Commission
  • Bilingual skills in both English & Spanish

Job Contributions

  • Assist the Decedent Services Program Coordinator in investigating and locating decedent demographic information for the initiation of CIDS referrals and distributing to appropriate staff
  • Create and maintain rotation and interment schedules, reports, and spreadsheets to monitor referrals and case activity to ensure proper delivery of services
  • Assist in the review of CIDS referrals and determine approval or denial of the case, acting as the authorizing agent for the disposition of decedents
  • Gather information to process non-routine requests, evaluate complex situations, and provide a satisfactory resolution to partner and customer complaints or concerns
  • Distribute, monitor, coordinate, and support the workload among the team
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce policies and procedures as they apply to indigent or abandoned decedent referrals from either the OME or the community
  • Ensure compliance, quality control, and accuracy in all operational objectives and mandated services delivered at the Office of Vital Registration’s Indigent Decedent Services program, including the execution of goals, reporting, and strategies
  • Monitor, maintain, and place orders for office supplies and equipment, and assist in supply audits

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
  • Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, or requires walking or standing to a significant degree
  • Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware: All staff work with electronic medical records and state databases

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required as necessary (i.e., gloves and mask)
