About the role

The Data Analytics & Commercial Insights Lead is responsible for delivering market intelligence, commercial insights, forecasting and portfolio valuation analysis that supports strategic, operational and investment decision-making across the Energy Markets & Development portfolio.

The role provides leadership in forecasting methodologies, analytical standards and data-driven decision-making, ensuring stakeholders have access to trusted insights that optimise portfolio value, manage risk and support long-term growth.

Working closely with Finance, Trading, Commercial and Strategy teams, the role will lead the continuous improvement of forecasting, valuation and analytical models across electricity, gas and environmental products, translating complex market and modelling outputs into actionable insights that drive value creation, risk management and portfolio optimisation. In addition, the role will support the uplift of electricity market knowledge and commercial capability across the broader Energy Markets & Development function, strengthening knowledge transfer, collaboration and alignment between Finance, Trading, Portfolio Analysis, Commercial and Development teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

Commercial Insights & Decision Support

• Provide analytical and commercial support for strategic, operational and investment decisions.
• Translate complex modelling outputs into clear, concise and actionable commercial insights for senior stakeholders.
• Identify key value drivers, portfolio risks and optimisation opportunities across energy market activities.
• Develop scenario analysis and sensitivity modelling to support business planning and decision-making.
• Support evaluation of new products, investment opportunities and commercial initiatives through data-driven analysis.
• Support business case development, investment evaluation, asset valuation and capital allocation decisions through robust commercial analysis and modelling.
• Prepare presentations, reports and recommendations for senior leadership and business stakeholders.
  

Market Intelligence & Regulatory Insights

• Develop and maintain a forward-looking view of electricity, gas and environmental markets to support commercial strategy, portfolio optimisation and investment decision-making.
• Monitor market, policy and regulatory developments and assess their potential impact on portfolio performance, asset valuations and commercial opportunities.
• Develop and promote a deeper understanding of electricity market dynamics, pricing drivers, trading strategies, portfolio risks and value drivers across the Energy Markets & Development team.
• Identify emerging risks, market trends and value creation opportunities, providing proactive recommendations to senior stakeholders.
• Support the development of portfolio strategies through analysis of market fundamentals, pricing dynamics, supply-demand balances and competitive market developments.
• Provide independent challenge and insight on market assumptions used in forecasting, valuation and investment decision-making processes.
• Translate complex market developments into concise and actionable insights for Finance, Trading, Commercial, Development and Executive stakeholders.
• Contribute to business planning, investment evaluations and strategic initiatives by providing evidence-based market and commercial analysis.
  

Portfolio Modelling & Forecasting Excellence

• Provide thought leadership and independent challenge to valuation, forecasting and budgeting approaches across electricity, gas and environmental products, supporting BAU teams in continuously improving methodologies, assumptions, scenario analysis and insight generation.
• Improve model architecture, transparency and usability to support commercial decision-making and portfolio optimisation.
• Review and challenge key assumptions, sensitivities and value drivers to enhance forecasting accuracy and stakeholder confidence.
• Ensure models appropriately reflect market dynamics and pricing fundamentals, trading and hedging strategies, contract positions, portfolio exposures, and commercial opportunities and risks.
• Support ongoing model evolution in response to changing market conditions, regulatory developments and business strategies.
• Identify opportunities to automate processes, improve reporting efficiency and strengthen analytical capability across the portfolio.
• Collaborate with Finance, Trading, Commercial and Strategy teams to ensure models remain aligned with business requirements and decision-making needs.
  

Capability Development & Knowledge Transfer

• Support the uplift of electricity market knowledge and commercial capability across Energy Markets & Development.
• Build strong working relationships with Trading, Portfolio Analysis, Commercial, Finance and Development teams to enable knowledge sharing and alignment of market views.
• Facilitate the transfer of electricity market knowledge, including pricing fundamentals, market drivers, trading concepts, contract positions and portfolio risk considerations.
• Work with subject matter experts across the business to embed practical electricity market understanding into forecasting, valuation and commercial analysis processes.
• Promote consistent use of market insights, modelling assumptions and analytical approaches across relevant business teams.
• Help translate specialist trading and market concepts into commercially relevant insights that can be understood and applied by Finance and Senior stakeholders.
  

Continuous Improvement & Data Analytics

• Drive improvements in analytical methodologies, modelling standards and data governance practices.
• Leverage data visualisation, reporting and automation tools to improve business insights and decision-making.
• Identify opportunities to simplify, automate and enhance existing forecasting and reporting processes.
• Promote self-service analytics and reporting capability across Finance, Trading, Commercial and Strategy teams.
• Lead knowledge-sharing initiatives that improve stakeholder understanding of electricity markets, forecasting methodologies and portfolio analytics.
  

What You’ll Bring

• Degree in Engineering, Analytics, Computer or Data Science, Mathematics, Finance, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of energy markets, including electricity, gas and environmental products.
• Strong understanding of electricity market fundamentals, including wholesale pricing, market drivers, trading strategies, contract positions and portfolio risk
•  Experience in a front-office, market operations, trading, portfolio management, or commercial energy markets environment is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical, commercial and problem-solving skills.
• Advanced financial modelling, forecasting and valuation experience.
• Experience working with large datasets and complex market information.
• Ability to communicate complex analytical outcomes to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to build commercial capability in others by translating technical market concepts into practical business insights.
• Proficiency in Excel and financial models; experience with Power BI, SQL, Python or other analytics tools highly regarded.
• Ability to engage with subject matter experts and convert specialist market knowledge into scalable analytical frameworks, reports and decision-support tools.
