Job Description Summary

The Customs and Trade Compliance Coordinator is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and improving trade compliance procedures and programs, performing reviews of AAM compliance performance as well as Customs Broker and Service Provider compliance, reviewing and reporting trade-related costs and identifying cost-savings opportunities and Corporate reporting requirements, maintaining special programs and certifications, and communicating with government agencies as required.

Job Description:

Customs Compliance & Operational Controls

  • Perform customs declaration audits and transactional reviews to identify compliance risks, documentation discrepancies, process gaps, and improvement opportunities.
  • Verify compliance with European Union Customs Code (UCC) requirements, local customs regulations, and company policies.
  • Ensure customs operational procedures and internal controls are effectively implemented and consistently followed across plants, logistics providers, and customs brokers.
  • Support customs compliance reviews for import, export, valuation, tariff classification, country of origin, and customs documentation activities.
  • Assist in maintaining customs records and documentation in accordance with legal retention requirements.
  • Assist and monitor regional plants customs teams and activities

Audit, Recovery & Investigation Activities

  • Support internal and external customs audits, post-clearance reviews, and customs authority inquiries.
  • Conduct investigations into customs discrepancies, broker filing errors, valuation issues, origin discrepancies, and documentation deficiencies.
  • Identify root causes of compliance and operational issues and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support duty recovery initiatives, customs claim submissions, and identification of cost-saving opportunities.
  • Assist in monitoring implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions resulting from audits and investigations.

Broker & Service Provider Management

  • Coordinate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and trade compliance service providers to ensure accurate and timely customs declarations.
  • Monitor service provider performance through established KPIs and compliance metrics.
  • Lead or participate in operational review meetings with brokers and service providers to address issues, review performance, and identify process improvements.
  • Escalate recurring operational or compliance concerns and support resolution efforts.

Training & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the development and delivery of customs and trade compliance training for internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure associates understand operational procedures, customs controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining customs procedures, work instructions, and training materials.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline customs processes, improve efficiencies, and enhance compliance controls.
  • Support automation, reporting enhancements, and data quality improvement initiatives.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Partner with operations, logistics, purchasing, finance, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to resolve customs-related issues and support business initiatives.
  • Support customs compliance aspects of supplier onboarding, sourcing projects, inventory movements, intercompany shipments, tooling transfers, and asset movements.
  • Assist in the management and monitoring of special customs procedures, where applicable
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Education

Required Skills & Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, International Trade, Supply Chain, Logistics, Finance, Customs, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in customs compliance, trade compliance, logistics, supply chain, audit, or operational compliance.
  • Working knowledge of European customs regulations and import/export procedures.
  • Experience conducting audits, compliance reviews, root-cause investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret customs regulations, procedures, and operational requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience working with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Plex, or similar) preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Automotive industry experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the European Union Customs Code (UCC).
  • Experience supporting customs audits and post-clearance reviews.
  • Familiarity with customs valuation, tariff classification, country of origin, and free trade agreements.
  • Experience working with customs brokers and third-party trade compliance providers.
  • Knowledge of AEO requirements and European special customs procedures.
  • Professional certifications in Customs, Trade Compliance, Audit, Supply Chain, or Continuous Improvement are desirable.
  • Experience supporting multi-country European operations.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
