About this Coop - Mechatronics Engineer (Internship) role at ASML
Introduction to the job
The DUV Reticle Stage IBS MDU team is responsible for engineering activities supporting the reticle stage, a precision mechatronic subsystem within ASML’s DUV lithography systems. Our mechatronics engineers use MATLAB-based analysis tools to evaluate system dynamics and performance using large sets of measurement data.
As our analysis needs evolve, these engineering tools need to evolve with them. Many have been developed and extended over time by different engineers, which means that understanding the existing methods often requires combining code investigation, technical documentation, and knowledge from experienced engineers. We are looking for a co-op student who is excited to work at the intersection of mechatronics, data analysis, signal processing, and software development.
Role and responsibilities
Your primary assignment will be to develop and improve MATLAB-based analysis tools for DUV Reticle Stage dynamic performance, with a particular focus on power spectral density (PSD) analysis and visualization.
You will work closely with experienced ASML mechatronics engineers to understand existing analysis methods, identify requirements, implement improvements, and validate the results against existing engineering analyses.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Develop and update MATLAB tools for analysis and visualization of Reticle Stage dynamic performance data, particularly PSD and frequency-domain analysis.
- Learn how existing analysis tools and methods work by reviewing MATLAB code, available documentation, and example datasets.
- Interview and collaborate with mechatronics engineers to gather requirements and uncover engineering knowledge that may not yet be fully documented.
- Translate engineering requirements into maintainable MATLAB functions, analysis workflows, and visualizations.
- Validate new or modified analysis methods against known datasets and existing engineering results.
- Investigate discrepancies and work with subject-matter experts to determine whether they originate from data processing, algorithms, assumptions, or implementation.
- Improve usability and documentation so future engineers can understand and confidently use the analysis tools.
- Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback from the mechatronics engineering team.
This assignment offers the opportunity to work on a real precision-mechatronics system while gaining hands-on experience with engineering data analysis, signal processing, MATLAB development, and collaborative problem solving.
This position is located on-site in Wilton, CT. It requires onsite presence to attend in-person work-related events, trainings and meetings and to further ensure teamwork, collaboration and innovation. Must be available for 6 to 9 months
Education and experience
We are looking for a college junior or senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Robotics, or a related engineering field, who is available for a 6-month co-op assignment.
To be successful in this role, you should have:
Technical skills
- Experience programming in MATLAB through coursework, projects, research, or previous internships/co-ops.
- Understanding of fundamental mechanical dynamics and vibrations.
- Familiarity with signal processing and frequency-domain analysis, such as Fourier transforms, frequency response, or power spectral density.
- Ability to work with experimental or measurement datasets and create clear engineering plots and visualizations.
- A structured approach to testing and validating computational results.
- Familiarity with Git, SVN, or another version-control system is beneficial but not required.
Personal skills
- Strong curiosity and willingness to dig into an unfamiliar technical problem.
- Comfortable approaching engineers, asking questions, and gathering information from multiple subject-matter experts.
- Able to take loosely documented requirements and turn them into a structured engineering solution.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, particularly when validating numerical results.
- Able to work independently while actively seeking feedback and collaborating with an engineering team.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical work for future users.
The current base hourly range for this role is currently:
$18.00 to $48.00 per hour
