We are looking for a Controls Lead Engineer to take technical ownership of the Controls Engineering scope across complex customer projects in EMEA.

This is a senior, highly visible engineering role where you will lead the Controls Engineering technical execution strategy, coordinate engineering resources, manage technical risks and interfaces, and act as a key technical authority throughout the project lifecycle.

You will work closely with Project Management, Mechanical Engineering, Structures, Installation, Commissioning, Procurement, Manufacturing, customers and external consultants to ensure Controls Engineering is delivered safely, to the required quality, and within agreed cost and schedule commitments.

The role covers the full project lifecycle – from sales support and project handover through design, procurement, installation, commissioning, customer acceptance and project closeout.

The base pay range for this role, at the time of posting, is estimated to be the following should this role be filled in the respective country:

 

Italy: €49,125 - €72,050 annual gross (Compensation will be aligned with the applicable National Collective Labour Agreement, namely the CBA , Metalmeccanico Industria)

Lithuania: €42,750 - €62,700 annual gross

 

Final compensation will be determined by various factors such as work location, education, experience, knowledge, and skills.

Tasks and Qualifications:

What you'll be responsible for:

  • Lead and coordinate the Controls Engineering scope across complex customer projects, ensuring delivery against project objectives, customer requirements, quality standards, budget and schedule.

  • Define the Controls Engineering execution strategy, resource requirements, engineering milestones and project readiness activities.

  • Support the sales and project handover phases through technical input, estimation, scheduling, solution review and identification of the engineering capabilities required for delivery.

  • Develop and maintain detailed Controls Engineering design and commissioning programmes, aligned with mechanical design, installation plans, customer milestones and approval cycles.

  • Act as the primary Controls Engineering point of contact for Project Management, Site Management, Procurement, Manufacturing, Installation, Commissioning, design consultants and customers.

  • Provide technical leadership to Controls Engineering teams through task allocation, prioritisation, technical decision-making, reporting, risk management and early escalation.

  • Own and coordinate key Controls Engineering deliverables, including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Descriptions of Operation (DOO), Bills of Materials (BOMs), procurement plans, installation documentation, customer deliverables and technical documentation.

  • Ensure Controls Engineering quality gates, design risk assessments, safety design validation and site-readiness requirements are completed at the appropriate project stages.

  • Ensure Controls Engineering deliverables and technical information are correctly transferred to customers and are available to support installation, commissioning and customer service training.

  • Maintain Controls Engineering status reporting, resource plans, schedule updates, financial forecasts and cost control, ensuring risks, changes and project variances are clearly documented and escalated.

  • Coordinate interfaces between Controls, Mechanical Engineering, Structures and Installation, ensuring technical solutions remain aligned with project requirements and customer milestones.

  • Conduct on-site safety audits when visiting customer sites and identify any specific installation requirements or corrective actions.

  • Drive the evolution of Controls Engineering practices through continuous improvement initiatives, technical standardization, process optimisation and the development of scalable, repeatable solutions that improve engineering quality, delivery efficiency and operational excellence.

  • Act as a senior technical mentor and role model for Controls Engineers and Lead Engineers, shaping the development of future engineering leaders and promoting a culture of technical excellence, accountability, innovation and continuous learning.

What we're looking for:

  • Educated to degree level (bachelor’s degree or higher) in technical Engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in an industrial automation environment, with strong experience leading engineering teams on complex customer projects.

  • Strong Controls Engineering expertise, with the ability to challenge designs, validate concepts, make sound technical decisions and maintain engineering quality under delivery pressure.

  • High-level expertise in Material Control Systems (MCS) and the ability to make and defend technically sound decisions in complex automation environments.

  • Previous experience as a Controls Lead, Area Lead or equivalent on at least one Amazon project, with clear ownership of scope, interfaces, risks and customer interactions.

  • Strong understanding of Amazon Controls standards and design expectations, with the ability to translate them into executable engineering solutions.

  • Good understanding of technical manuals, drawings, design requirements and relevant ISO standards within automated warehouse, intralogistics or material handling environments.

  • Understanding of the Machinery Directive and relevant harmonised standards; machinery safety qualification or experience would be advantageous.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to represent Dematic as a technical authority when working directly with strategic customers, Construction and RME, consultants and internal project teams.

  • Experience using project management tools such as MS Project, JIRA or similar.

  • Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to proactively identify risks, develop mitigation plans and escalate issues early in a customer-facing environment.

  • Ability to work effectively under delivery pressure, compressed timelines and changing project scope while maintaining engineering quality, cost control and clear communication.

  • Strong mentoring and technical leadership skills, with the ability to coach engineers, support decision-making and promote technical excellence.

  • Full working proficiency in English.

What to expect:

This is a customer-facing technical leadership position with great ownership of Controls Engineering delivery. You will have the opportunity to influence technical solutions, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and work on complex, large-scale automation projects across EMEA.

Travel: approximately 50%, depending on the stage of the project, travel to customer and project sites across EMEA.
