About this Consultant, Software Engineer - Platform Engineering role at Nationwide

Nationwide · Hybrid · Ohio - Columbus, Three Nationwide Plaza
If you’re passionate about being part of a dynamic organization that enables a Fortune 100 company with nearly $70 billion in annual sales to drive innovation and adopt new technologies that deliver business results, then Nationwide’s Technology team could be the place for you! At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

The Consultant, Software Engineering supports the design, development, operation, and continuous improvement of reusable enterprise AI platforms and services that help teams deliver trusted AI solutions at scale.

Working within a cross-functional product and platform team, this role translates requirements into secure, reliable, and maintainable capabilities; applies strong software engineering practices; and contributes to shared patterns, reference architectures, controls, and accelerators.

The role contributes to production readiness, service management, observability, supportability, and cost visibility for the capabilities it helps build and operate. The ideal candidate brings foundational expertise in software engineering and cloud technologies, a product and AI-first mindset, learning agility, collaboration skills, and a willingness to own operational outcomes while navigating ambiguity. The candidate should recognize when to use a reusable platform capability instead of a one-off solution.

Technical Stack & Expertise

The ideal candidate will have experience designing, building, and operating enterprise AI platforms and agentic systems utilizing:

  • AWS AgentCore and AWS Bedrock for developing, deploying, governing, and scaling enterprise AI applications and AI agents.
  • Agent orchestration frameworks such as Strands and implementation of Model Context Protocol (MCP) for secure integration of AI agents with enterprise tools, services, and data sources.
  • Model management practices including model selection, evaluation, testing, versioning, deployment, monitoring, guardrails, and lifecycle management.
  • Token economics and AI cost optimization, including token consumption analysis, usage forecasting, model utilization monitoring, inference cost management, and financial governance.
  • Engineering and operational excellence practices focused on reliability, observability, security, and cost controls, including monitoring, logging, distributed tracing, incident management, performance tuning, resiliency patterns, and service-level objectives (SLOs).
  • Cloud-native software engineering using APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, containerization, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and platform automation.
  • AI governance, security, responsible AI controls, and risk management practices required to support compliant and secure enterprise adoption of AI technologies.

This position follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring in-office attendance two days per week at our Columbus, Ohio (preferred), Des Moines, Iowa, or Scottsdale, Arizona office locations.

Current internal associates working remotely may also be considered for this position.

Work Authorization: This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT Extension program.
