About this Co-Op - ICAP Market Operations role at Co-Ops at New York ISO

Co-Ops at New York ISO · Onsite · Rensselaer, New York, United States

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO takes pride in recruiting, developing and retaining highly talented individuals. Our co-op programs give young professionals the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of New York electricity markets, bulk electricity systems and how we plan for New York State’s energy future.

The NYISO is seeking a Co-Op student to join our ICAP Market Operations to perform analytical work supporting resource adequacy and capacity-market research. The student will analyze historical Installed Reserve Margin study cases to identify changes in seasonal and locational Expected Unserved Energy while considering the annual reliability criterion used for the New York Control Area.

The student will also analyze generator outage data, including outage characteristics and potential relationships with temperature, to evaluate assumptions related to generator-outage randomness and Equivalent Demand Forced Outage Rate calculations. The resulting analysis will support research concerning Installed Reserve Margin methodology and seasonal reliability risk.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the Installed Reserve Margin study process.
  • Review historical Installed Reserve Margin study cases.
  • Analyze changes in seasonal and locational Expected Unserved Energy.
  • Organize, validate, and analyze generator-outage data.
  • Categorize outage events based on available characteristics.
  • Evaluate prior analytical findings concerning generator outages and temperature.
  • Assess patterns that may confirm or challenge assumptions about the randomness of generator outages.
  • Examine potential implications for Equivalent Demand Forced Outage Rate calculations.
  • Apply probabilistic or statistical analysis to resource-adequacy questions.
  • Document analytical methods, assumptions, results, and limitations.
  • Develop tables, visualizations, or other materials that communicate findings clearly.
  • Contribute analysis supporting resource-adequacy research and whitepapers.
  • Collaborate with professionals in ICAP Market Operations, Market Structures, Scheduling, and Planning.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Interest in electricity markets, resource adequacy, power system reliability, or capacity-market operations.
  • Strong data-analysis skills.
  • Experience with probabilistic modeling or probabilistic analytics is preferred.
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work with complex technical datasets.
  • Ability to document analytical methods and conclusions clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to analytical accuracy.
  • Written and verbal communication skills suitable for presenting technical findings.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, market, and planning professionals.
  • Willingness to learn specialized reliability and resource-adequacy concepts.

The NYISO offers the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely, providing our employees with an enhanced work life balance. This internship will be a hybrid program, with the expectation that employees will be local to the Albany, NY area.

All offers of employment will be made contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
