About this Clinical Mentor (25) (Internal) role at Baylor College of Medicine - Children's Foundation Malawi

Baylor College of Medicine - Children's Foundation Malawi · Onsite · Mangochi, Machinga, Phalombe, Salima, Balaka or Lilongwe District, Central Region, Malawi

Position Description:

Clinical mentors are clinical providers with extensive experience in HIV prevention, care, treatment, and delivery of client-centered services.  Their primary role is to provide mentorship, capacity building and systems support to Ministry of Health providers to strengthen clinical management, quality of care, and patient outcomes by sharing best practices in clinical care and systems support developed and implemented under CORE. A central focus is capacity building and progressive skills transfer to MoH staff, with the long-term goal of enabling facilities to independently sustain high-quality services without ongoing mentor support. Through side-by-side mentorship, mentors model best practices, strengthen team-based care and supervision, and promote use of data for quality improvement. They are responsible for teaching best practices and providing capacity building in addition to provision of clinical care to avoid service delivery gaps. High-volume facilities, including DHOs and community hospitals, have full-time facility-based mentors, while smaller facilities receive support from mobile mentorship teams.

Essential Duties

  • Provide hands-on clinical mentorship and capacity building to clinical providers
  • Support progressive skills-transfer and ownership of clinical and quality-improvement activities
  • Model best practices in clinical management, supportive supervision, and team-based approaches to care, including maintaining referral networks within and across districts
  • Support MoH providers at site to review site level performance data to develop strategies that address areas of poor performance based on MoH indicators.
  • Ensure that testing, linkage, and treatment initiation activities are occurring every day in an organized and efficient manner (for HIV, Hepatitis B, syphilis, advanced HIV disease, malaria, Tuberculosis, and any other testing services as indicated).
  • Provide clinical care as needed to prevent service delivery gaps, while using service delivery as an opportunity for practical teaching and mentorship
  • Work collaboratively with facility and district MOH leadership to identify capacity gaps and develop capacity building plans to address gaps
  • Provide guidance and mentorship on use of various platforms including EMR to ensure the facility team members are comfortable to both use and find relevant information in the system.
  • Ensure ART clinic takes place daily or on a regular schedule, opens on time and proceeds in an organized and efficient manner responding to client needs.
  • Ensure that client health records and facility registers are completed properly and kept in a confidential, organized and protected manner. Where tools are not appropriately filled, provide the relevant mentorship.
  • Serve as a representative of BFM-AFGHS program to MOH staff

Key Deliverables

  • Ensure facilities maintain high VL suppression performance and retain clients in care
  • Weekly update to district team leadership on gaps, challenges and opportunities for improvement.
  • Monthly assessment of facility-level data to identify priority sites for mentorship, support and capacity building.
  • Guide facilities with gaps to initiate CQI initiatives to improve quality of care and performance.
  • Submission of all requested reports and information at indicated deadline and no later than 1 week after activity occurs.
  • Prompt response to all communication

The duties listed above are not exhaustive; roles and responsibilities may change in response to overall organizational need and strategic innovations

Requirements

  • Highly competent clinical officer, medical assistant or nurse with Degree in nursing studies with health systems management skills
  • At least 1 year of experience with Baylor CORE program and familiarity with best practices
  • 3+ years of experience implementing or managing programs with public health projects
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Certified ART provider
  • Strong oral and written English and Chichewa skills
  • Leader with demonstrated ability to work with colleagues at all levels in the organization, and develop and maintain respectful relationships with donors, government and stakeholders
  • Experience monitoring programs and analyzing data
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as a minimum
  • Work will be mostly in the field. Work day 8 hours, and may include early morning and evening
  • The job is physically demanding and tiring due to traveling into rural areas and long working hours.
