At Maersk, we are transforming the future of commerce through fully integrated logistics. As global trade continues to evolve, Maersk is investing in innovative logistics solutions that enable businesses to move cargo faster, more efficiently and with greater reliability across the globe.

About the Role

This is a commercially focused, customer-facing role with full responsibility for the acquisition and development of new client accounts across the UK & Ireland. The Business Development Manager (BDM) will build and manage a personal portfolio of new customers, with a clear focus on strategically targeted customers — including all Maersk integrated products; E-Commerce, Ocean, Air, LCL and broader Logistics & Services.

Operating on a national basis, the BDM will play an active role in identifying, qualifying and pursuing new business opportunities — transforming market opportunities into long-term commercial success for Maersk.

Key Responsibilities

New Customer Development

  • Deliver Maersk E-Commerce, Air, LCL and Ocean Logistics & Services volume targets from a new customer portfolio through the sale of Maersk product solutions.
  • Develop compelling value propositions and sales enablement materials tailored to the UK & Ireland market.
  • Identify, qualify and develop new commercial opportunities nationally.
  • Develop and execute complex, consultative solutions that address identified customer pain points, collaborating with product owners to meet customer expectations.
  • Ensure that all contracts, agreements and SOPs for customers within the portfolio comply with Maersk guidelines, are comprehensively documented and communicated to relevant Maersk L&S parties.

Pipeline & Commercial Strategy

  • Build and manage a high-quality pipeline, ensuring accurate forecasting, opportunity tracking and a sufficiently robust CRM Open Sales Pipeline to deliver Closed Won targets.
  • Create and maintain customer strategies with a clear focus on customer pain points and needs, aligned with Maersk products, services and predefined trade lanes.
  • Manage the 'upselling' process within the assigned national territory, comprehensively pursuing non-controlled shippers and network-derived sales leads. (if assigned)
  • Monitor contracted opportunities and ensure expected volumes convert into realised business, maintaining visibility of pipeline value, revenue and gross profit performance.

Ways of Working

  • Ensure all commercial processes, guidelines, tools and procedures are adopted consistently and without exception.
  • Execute periodically introduced sales campaigns to drive focused development of the sales portfolio within the national territory.
  • Participate in customer meetings, discovery workshops, tenders and commercial negotiations.
  • Provide market intelligence, customer insights and competitive analysis to support Maersk growth initiatives.
  • Work closely with Product, Pricing, Finance and Commercial Strategy teams to support successful opportunity conversion.
  • Support customer implementations, onboarding activities and go-live readiness.
  • KPIs and objectives agreed on an annual basis in conjunction with the direct line manager.

Person Specification

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven experience in a customer-facing commercial or business development role, ideally within the logistics or supply chain industry.
  • Strong understanding of logistics and forwarding products, solutions and terminology within the UK market, including E-Commerce.
  • Demonstrated success in building pipelines and converting opportunities into sustainable, long-term revenue growth.
  • Experience of working across a matrix, multicultural organisation, building strong relationships and networks both locally and internationally.
  • Existing knowledge and network within the UK freight forwarding, logistics or e-commerce market would be highly advantageous.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proven track record of targeting, pursuing and winning opportunities through both personal and collaborative selling efforts.
  • Well-developed communication, persuasiveness, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Strong consultative selling and questioning skills, with a demonstrable ability to handle the most common customer objections.
  • Commercially astute with a strong understanding of pricing, margin, revenue and profitability drivers.
  • Strong analytical and forecasting capabilities, with a structured approach to pipeline management.
  • Ability to own opportunities end-to-end, from initial customer engagement through implementation and volume ramp-up.
  • Self-motivated and performance driven, comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy across a national territory.
