As a Burn Technician, you'll work alongside nurses and providers to support patients recovering from burn injuries, trauma, and critical illness. About the Burn Unit
Bronson's Burn Unit cares for patients recovering from burn injuries, trauma, and complex surgical conditions. Burn Technicians play a vital role in supporting both patients and the clinical team, helping ensure safe, compassionate, and efficient care throughout the recovery process.
Unlike a traditional PCA role, Burn Technicians support the needs of the entire unit and work closely with nurses to assist with specialized burn care, patient mobility, wound care preparation, hydrotherapy procedures, and activities of daily living.
This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy hands-on patient care, and want to develop specialized clinical skills while working as part of a highly collaborative team.
Training Commitment
To ensure success in this specialized role:
- Full-Time, Part-Time, and PRN team members must commit to full-time orientation hours during the first 6-8 weeks of employment
- Team members receive comprehensive burn care training and complete burn care and management competencies
What You'll Do
As a Burn Technician, you will:
- Work closely with nurses and providers to support patient care throughout the unit
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, mobility, ambulation, and range-of-motion exercises
- Monitor and document patient information, including vital signs and intake/output
- Assist with admissions, transfers, discharges, and transportation throughout the hospital
- Respond to patient needs and communicate observations promptly to the nursing team
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment that promotes patient comfort and recovery
- Support patient safety initiatives and follow established infection prevention practices
- Help ensure the unit is stocked, organized, and prepared for patient care activities
Specialized Burn Care Responsibilities
Burn Technicians receive specialized training and may assist with:
- Burn dressing changes and wound care procedures
- Minor debridement procedures
- Preparation and assistance with major debridement procedures and escharotomies
- Hydrotherapy and shower treatment preparation
- Removal and application of dressings, topical agents, and staples
- Preparation of patients, supplies, and treatment environments for burn wound care
- Monitoring and ordering specialized burn care supplies
- Early mobilization and rehabilitation activities that support patient recovery
- Maintaining strict infection prevention standards in treatment and hydrotherapy areas
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to complete specialized Burn Unit orientation and training requirements
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Ability to perform physically demanding patient care activities
Preferred
- Previous healthcare or patient care experience
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
- Knowledge of medical terminology
Certifications
- BLS certification required
- Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) certification within six months of hire
- Completion of burn care and management training modules
Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, repositioning, and assisting patients throughout the shift. Candidates must be able to regularly lift, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds and safely perform patient handling activities.
