JOB SUMMARY


The Automation Engineer 1 supports Product Development and Engineering through designing and building test systems and automating product testing as a member of the Test Automation Group (TAG). Designing and developing mechanical mechanisms, generating mechanical assemblies (CAD), programming (PLCs, Robots, etc.), wiring, and debugging are the normal tasks that are done on a regular basis. An ideal candidate has a strong aptitude for developing mechanical and electrical solutions based on a given challenge or requirement.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES / SKILLS

 

MECHANICAL


  • Design, assemble, and modify automated machinery to automate testing processes with guidance.
  • Knowledgeable in 3D CAD software, Solidworks or NX preferred.
  • Basic machining skills preferred.
  • Mechanically inclined, strong problem-solving skills, hands-on individual.

ELECTRICAL


  • Design, assemble, and modify electrical controls systems to automate testing processes with guidance.
  • Proficient understanding of circuits/electronics.
  • Proficient understanding of AC vs DC power electronics.
  • Proficient understanding of sensors and actuators used in automation.
  • Proficient in the use of typical lab equipment (multimeters, various instrumentation, power supplies, data acquisition systems, power analyzers, etc.).

SOFTWARE/PROGRAMMING


  • Develop and debug automation programs (PLC, HMI, robotics, etc.) with guidance.
  • Basic knowledge of LabVIEW, Allen-Bradley, and/or Mitsubishi PLCs and programming preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of HMI programming preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Ignition or other SCADA preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, generative AI, AI agents, machine learning, predictive analytics, prompt engineering, knowledge retrieval, or optimization is preferred.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT


  • Demonstrated project management skills -- must be organized and pay excellent attention to detail.
  • Routinely report project progress.
  • Support coordination with other engineers to ensure design intent and cost effectiveness of test systems are achieved.
  • Establish technical manuals, drawings, models, training documentation, and troubleshooting guides for newly established automated equipment/processes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Minimum BS degree (preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a similar/equivalent field experience
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience

OTHER REQUIREMENTS


  • Ability to travel 5%


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Maintain stationary position around 50% of time for computer work.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds on occasion.

Regular talking and hearing.

Regular typing on a keyboard.

Frequent standing and walking indoors and outdoors.

Occasional stooping and bending.
