Job Summary

Under general supervision, overhauls, repairs, and maintains different types of gasoline, diesel powered automotive, and a variety of other mechanical equipment by performing the following duties.

Job Description

Safety-Sensitive Position: Yes (as defined under Oklahoma Statute Title 63 § 427.8)

All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion, or initial hiring into a DOT/safety- sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or requires a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.

Essential Job Functions
• Repair damaged vehicles.
• Prepare automobiles and trucks for County employees to checkout. Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, brakes, main bearing assemblies, cooling systems, ignition systems, fuel systems of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles.
• Repair and replace transmissions, differentials, and front and rear end assemblies, air compressors, hydraulic systems, electronic ignition systems, electronic fuel injection systems and other specialized related equipment.
• Perform welding work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
• Repairs damaged automobiles, using specialized repair tools and equipment. Install automobile glass.
• Clean and replace radiators.
• Make field service calls as necessary.
• Oversee and inspect the work performed by outside vendors.
• Respond quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed.
• Maintain safe working conditions; identify and correct or report unsafe conditions in work areas.
• Assist with training new employees.

• Snow removal, sand bagging, and cleaning of properties.

• Complete and fill out all assigned work orders and assigned documents.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Skill in use and operation of tools, and diagnostic equipment.

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in repairing light and heavy duty automotive equipment; of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; of mechanical repair of heavy duty trucks and construction equipment; of safety precautions; of millimeter function and operation; of all computer systems and on-board diagnostic systems; and of departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment; to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to interpret and work from sketches and pencil diagrams; to diagnose and repair electronic fuel injection distributor less ignition systems, ABS brake systems, air bag systems, air conditioning and heater systems, climate control systems, and R12 and R134, and R12344yf gas systems; to diagnose and repair electronic controlled equipment; to isolate and test electronic sensors; to stay abreast of current trends in automotive science; and to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Automotive Diagnostic software, Internet software, word processing software, and spreadsheet software.

This job has not supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED plus broad trade knowledge equivalent to 2 years of training received in a formal apprentice program as an automotive technician and over 3 years satisfactory full-time paid employment as a maintenance mechanic, including small engine and hydraulic systems, repair work. Any equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 1 year of satisfactory full-time paid employment for 1 year of the required education with a maximum substitution of 2 years.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumferences, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, of diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
ASE Certified or equivalent
Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License possessed for at least 6 months

Defensive Driving with Tulsa County within 6 months of hired
