About this Associate Software Engineer role at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories · Onsite · Washington - Pullman

Associate Software Engineer Manufacturing Automation (Pullman, WA)

We are adding an Associate Software Engineer to our Manufacturing Automation Software (MAS) team in Pullman, WA. This is a hands-on software engineering role! You’ll be developing, improving, and supporting the software solutions that operate our manufacturing systems. This team ensures that our manufacturing lines run seamlessly and continuously. Beyond development, you’ll be troubleshooting system components including software, services, device code, networking and hardware interfaces.

Your focus will be constantly increasing both the level of automation and the robustness/uptime of our systems. Our goal is maximum throughput with zero unplanned downtime for the manufacturing lines. You will collaborate with Test Engineers, Process Engineers, Operators, Software Engineers, Data Engineers, Information Systems team members and manufacturing leadership to ensure that your solutions exceed the expectations of all stakeholders.

This role rewards people who love to get to the bottom of a hard problem and who thrive in a high-throughput production environment. Experience with creating production software and automating systems is especially valuable.

Why This Work Matters

Our work at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories makes electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. Our devices must operate flawlessly for decades, then when called upon to act, respond to system faults within milliseconds to ensure safety, avoid damage, and minimize outages. Global utilities supplying hundreds of millions of industrial, commercial, and residential consumers depend on SEL products every day. Our team ensures that we continuously produce the highest quality products at high volume. Our solutions are the key to safe, smooth, efficient operation of our product factories.

What You Will Do

The solutions you develop will have an immediate impact on the efficiency of factory operations and on the quality of the products SEL delivers. You will develop and support the infrastructure that automates operation of our production systems and continuously collects data to drive improvement

Our team's customers are primarily internal to SEL. This allows us to interact directly with the people using our software on a day-to-day basis. We have extremely short feedback loops, and we collaborate with our users to design solutions that best fit their needs. You’ll be able to experience the impact of your work first-hand and immediately. If you are looking for an opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in developing solutions for a World Class Manufacturing company, we invite you to join our team!

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Creating drivers / interface controllers for production machines including automated placement, soldering, inspection, and automated test equipment.

  • Integrating automation software with sophisticated manufacturing information systems. This includes both control / operations and making sure that the right data is available to the right sub-systems in a timely fashion.

  • Troubleshooting automation failures down to the system component level, isolating root cause, and addressing the issue to make our systems more resilient and reliable.

This Role Might Be for You If:

  • You're compelled by collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled technical professionals doing real work that really matters to ensure uninterrupted high-volume production.

  • You’re excited by the opportunity to develop and support mission critical automation software and data analytics solutions using:

  • Object oriented design approaches

  • Object oriented programming languages (C#, Python, Java, C++, etc.)

  • Web application development including back-end webservices (WCF, ASP.NET, C#, Java, etc.) and front-end web design (React JS, HTML, Razor, Blazor, etc.)

  • Graphical User Interface applications in Windows environments

  • You understand, and have experience with, modern communications protocols

  • You would rather find the real root cause than apply a quick patch

  • You have at least a year of experience building mission critical production software solutions

  • You have a B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience

Even Better If

  • You are familiar with manufacturing and automation processes

  • You have hands-on experience with automated parts placement, high volume soldering, flying probe, bed-of-nails, or functional test systems

  • You have more than two years of experience. We’ll consider you for a higher-level role.
