POSITION SPECIFICS

Tenured/Tenure-Line Associate Professor – Division of Epidemiology
Department of Public Health Sciences, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, PA

The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the Penn State College of Medicine announces a tenured or tenure-line faculty position at the Associate Professor level in the Division of Epidemiology for a qualified individual with expertise in infectious disease epidemiology.
The mission of PHS is to advance health through the design, conduct, and analysis of population-based biomedical research—including clinical trials, observational research, health services research, and regulatory and translational science—supporting both basic science and clinical research, educating future generations of health professionals, and engaging with the community to improve health and well-being. We seek a highly collaborative researcher with experience in infectious disease epidemiology to conduct independent and team-based research. Interest in teaching is required, and experience teaching graduate-level courses is preferred.

PHS comprises three academic divisions: Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, and Health Services and Behavioral Research. The department provides comprehensive infrastructure for faculty, the College, and Penn State Health, including expertise in biostatistics, study design, data management, research computing, project management, and finance and administration. PHS offers graduate programs including the PhD in Epidemiology, PhD in Biostatistics, Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Research, and Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security with an option in Public Health Preparedness, as well as several graduate certificate programs.

The ideal candidate will have an established, externally funded research program in infectious disease epidemiology, with particular strengths in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and other emerging or re-emerging infectious threats. Strong candidates may focus on advancing understanding of the epidemiology, prevention, and clinical management of STIs; evaluating disparities in infectious disease burden across rural and urban communities; and improving public health surveillance, diagnostic practices, and access to testing and treatment. Scholarship that integrates epidemiologic methods with clinical, community-based, or health system–based research—such as assessing public health policy impacts, analyzing diagnostic and screening practices, addressing social determinants of infectious disease transmission, or informing health equity initiatives—is highly valued. Candidates with collaborative experience with public health agencies, development or evaluation of diagnostic tools, or translation of epidemiologic findings into interventions for health departments, clinics, or community partners are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will dedicate approximately 80% effort to research, 15% to teaching and mentoring, and 5% to service.

A doctoral degree in epidemiology or a related discipline is required, along with a track record of scholarly activity in infectious disease epidemiology, including leadership of NIH-funded studies.

The Penn State College of Medicine is located in Hershey, PA, near the state capital of Harrisburg, with convenient access to major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia (1.5 hours), Baltimore (1.5 hours), New York City (2.5 hours), Washington DC (2.5 hours), and Pittsburgh (3.5 hours). Harrisburg International Airport and AMTRAK are less than ten miles away.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials.
