Job Description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in areas such as medical imaging physics, nuclear medicine physics including theranostics, radiotherapy physics, and radiobiology. The successful candidate will join a strong Medical Physics and Health Physics Graduate Program that is a partnership between LSU and the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Primary activities include research, teaching within the CAMPEP-accredited Program, and supervising MS and PhD students.  An appointment at the assistant professor level is expected; exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for an associate professor tenure-track position.

 

Research responsibilities include leading a vibrant, cutting-edge program in basic, applied, translational, or population-based research, in addition to fostering collaborations both within and beyond the Program faculty.  The candidate will have access to outstanding resources (e.g., radiotherapy and imaging devices, high performance computing) and a generous startup package. Opportunities exist for clinical engagement to enhance research and teaching activities, as well as to facilitate maintenance of Board certification, although clinical service is not a required part of the successful candidate's effort allocation.   

 

The Medical Physics Program currently is supported by 14 faculty including 6 active and emeritus faculty at LSU, 1 faculty at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, and 7 faculty at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in addition to physicians and clinical staff. The Program has 28 medical physics graduate students, with half working on MS degrees and half on PhD degrees.

 

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of LSU’s premier research departments with 52 faculty members, 19 postdoctoral researchers, 123 graduate students, and 18 staff. It consists of faculty working in a broad range of disciplines, including AMO physics, quantum information science, condensed matter physics and materials science, astrophysics, space physics, neutrino physics, high energy and nuclear physics, theoretical general relativity, gravitational wave detection, and medical physics. Grant and contract support totals more than $8.5 million per year. Major research facilities available to faculty include the LSU High Performance Computing Center with excellent access to supercomputing resources and support, the interdisciplinary research Center for Computation and Technology (CCT), LSU’s Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), and the NSF’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). Required Qualifications: (All levels) Ph.D. in medical physics, physics, or similar relevant field with demonstrated engagement in medical physics by post-graduate training, research, and scholarly activities. (Assoc. Professor) Minimum three years as an assistant professor with extensive publication record; evidence of excellence in leadership, research, and scholarly activities in medical physics; teaching experience; experience in student mentoring; national and/or international reputation.
