The Department of Classics at Carleton College invites applicants for a tenure-track position in classical philology to begin in the fall of 2027. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar who can teach Latin and Greek at all levels and is passionate about working in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in both of our four-course language sequences as well as upper-level Greek and Latin and in-translation courses on literature and culture. Carleton operates on a trimester calendar, with tenure-track positions teaching the equivalent of five courses across three ten-week terms. We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds .

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. Within the broad field of classical philology, the area of specialization is open, but we are especially interested in someone with research and teaching interests that will bolster our course offerings and contribute to the department’s teaching of literary analysis both for majors and non-majors. For more information about our Classics program and offerings, please visit the website at https://www.carleton.edu/classics/

Interested candidates should submit the following application materials online at https://carleton.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/CarletonCareers: (1) a cover letter that introduces the candidate, their teaching and research interests and strengths, and their short- and long-term goals; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a short (1-page) statement about teaching students from diverse backgrounds in an undergraduate, residential liberal arts environment; (4) short descriptions of two proposed in-translation literature or culture courses (150-300 words each) that would complement the core curriculum of the department.

Applications submitted by November 6, 2026 will receive full consideration. After an initial review of applications, for select candidates, the search committee will request three letters of recommendation, including one that specifically addresses teaching experience; if requested, these should be submitted by referees by December 1. Online interviews in December will be scheduled for these candidates and finalists will be invited to visit campus in January 2027.
