POSITION SPECIFICS
The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank with a research focus in Subsurface Energy Engineering. The appointment will be made at a rank commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
We seek an exceptional scholar who will contribute to and strengthen the department’s leadership in subsurface energy engineering through innovative, interdisciplinary research addressing critical challenges in subsurface energy production and storage and flow in porous media. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, all traditional petroleum engineering disciplines, including reservoir engineering; drilling and completions engineering; production and operations engineering; formation evaluation and petrophysics, as well as related and emerging areas such as enhanced geothermal systems; nuclear waste disposal; subsurface recovery of critical minerals; microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technologies; and AI-, data-, and computationally enabled approaches to subsurface engineering.

Competitive applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor must possess a Ph.D. in an engineering field directly related to their research area before beginning employment at Penn State. Candidates should demonstrate strong potential to establish an externally funded experimental, computational, or integrated research program that strengthens EME’s Subsurface Energy Engineering research area. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to excellence in education and mentoring, including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses across EME programs, advising and mentoring graduate students, and contributing service to the Department, College, University, and profession.
Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must meet the qualifications for Assistant Professor and additionally demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring, a strong record of research, publications, and external funding, and an established national or international reputation for scholarly or professional achievement. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing interdisciplinary research within the department and college and to serve as a collaborative leader who contributes to innovation and excellence across the department.

- A complete curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications;
- A research statement of no more than three pages describing the candidate’s research vision and future directions and explaining how their program would strengthen and expand EME’s research leadership;
- A teaching statement of no more than one page describing the candidate’s approach to teaching and mentoring and identifying courses within the EME undergraduate and graduate curriculum, as well as curricular areas, in which the candidate could make the greatest contributions; and
- Two published journal articles that the candidate considers their most impactful scholarly contributions.
