About the Team

You’ll join a team where people work with integrity, inclusion, innovation, agility, collaboration and commitment. In practice, that means sharing ownership, solving complex problems together and staying connected to the customer context, the purpose behind the work and how each role contributes to meaningful outcomes.

Mission Software Systems (MSS) brings together expertise across intelligence, software, and cloud to deliver end-to-end capability supporting the full intelligence lifecycle, from planning through to dissemination and feedback. The team fosters a culture of innovation, leveraging modern engineering practices and shared infrastructure to rapidly build, test, and deploy software solutions across a range of environments, including cloud. MSS also plays a key role in advancing technology modernisation within Government, delivering scalable and adaptable solutions for complex enterprise challenges.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team shaping the next generation of AI-powered solutions that deliver real-world impact. As an AI Software Engineer, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, machine learning, and cloud technologies to design, build, and deploy innovative applications that solve complex business challenges.

  • Design, develop, and implement scalable AI and machine learning solutions, taking products from concept through to production deployment.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into intelligent, customer-focused solutions.
  • Build and optimise cloud-native applications, APIs, and automation services that leverage modern AI technologies, including generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and advanced analytics.
  • Contribute to engineering excellence through code reviews, testing, DevOps practices, and continuous improvement initiatives that ensure secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions.

About You

We are looking for someone who is passionate about applying AI technologies to solve meaningful problems and enjoys working in a collaborative environment where innovation, learning, and continuous improvement are valued.

Essential

  • Experience designing and developing software applications using languages such as Python, Java, C#, or similar modern programming languages.
  • Experience building, integrating, or deploying AI, machine learning, or generative AI solutions in a commercial or enterprise environment.
  • Knowledge of machine learning frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, LangChain, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud and an understanding of cloud-native architecture principles.
  • Ability to design and consume APIs, work with structured and unstructured data, and integrate AI capabilities into end-to-end software solutions.
  • Experience applying software engineering best practices including version control, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and secure coding standards.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams while contributing independently to technical delivery outcomes.

Advantageous

  • Experience with large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, or AI agent frameworks.
  • Knowledge of MLOps, model monitoring, and AI governance practices.
  • Experience developing solutions using Azure AI Services, Azure OpenAI, Azure Machine Learning, or comparable platforms.
  • Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery environments and contributing to product-focused development teams.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related discipline.

This role requires the successful applicant to be an Australian citizen and hold an active TSPV security clearance.
