Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking an exceptional general surgeon to join the faculty of a dynamic and growing Division of Acute Care and Regional General Surgery. Our Division provides emergency general surgery, trauma and burn services at UW Health, and elective general surgery services to the Madison area UW affiliated hospitals. 


  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Assistant Professor (CHS), Associate Professor (CHS), Professor (CHS), Visiting Associate Professor, or Visiting Professor. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist. 
  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Service and Teaching:

    • Teach medical students, residents, and fellows.

    • Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. 

    • An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

  • Clinical:
    • The Acute Care & Elective General Surgeon will be based primarily at Unity Point Meriter hospital.  The selected candidate will have the opportunity to join a well-established group of general surgeons and expand the practice. There is also an opportunity to expand general surgical services to other regional UW Health affiliated hospitals.  Additional responsibility is to cover the Emergency General Surgery service at Meriter Hospital and East Madison Hospital on an average of 1 in 8-week basis.  

    • The primary site of this position will be at Unity Point Meriter Hospital. UP-Meriter hospital runs 11 operating rooms daily including specialty services in Vascular, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, GYN, plastic surgery and other subspecialties. As a UW affiliate, the emergency general surgery service at UP-Meriter is supported by 4-6 house staff (1-2PG1, 1PGY2, 1 PGY 4, 1 PG5, and occasionally a PGY 3). Four Advance practice Providers provide support as surgical assistants, on rounds and in clinic.  The Meriter and East Madison Hospital EGS service cares for all unplanned surgical admissions and provides inpatient consultations as needed.  

    • A principal duty of this position is developing relationships with UW Health regional partners through building relationships and establishing referral protocols to partner in providing general surgery services to those organizations.  Through these partnerships, the Division of Acute Care and Regional General Surgery seeks to reduce disparities in surgical access for patients in rural areas of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. The successful candidate will display a willingness and desire to work across a health care system to provide care across communities.

The Wisconsin Department of Surgery is one of the leading surgical departments in the nation, excelling in patient care, surgical education, and surgical research. We are composed of more than 130 full-time faculty across 10 divisions and nearly 200 additional staff who support our mission. Our surgeons perform approximately 20,000 operations per year for pediatric and adult patients. Training the next generation of surgeons and clinician-scientists is integral in our department, with more than 100 residents and fellows trained each year.


Compensation:

  • Negotiable, 12 month

Required Qualifications:

  • Wisconsin Medical license by start date of position.
  • Board certification or Board Eligible in Surgery through the American Board of Surgery or American Osteopathic Board of Surgery or equivalent by appointment start date,
  • Completion of a General Residency by the appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will display a willingness and desire to work across a health care system to provide care across the communities we serve.
  • For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CT or CHS track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS or CT track.

Education:

  • MD or DO, or equivalent required
