uOttawa’s facilities encompass three main sites that are comprised of over 600,000 square meters of building space (over 6.4 million square feet), 42.5 hectares of grounds, 125 buildings and 4,500 beds in 11 residences. There are over 150 employees in Facilities, including Project Managers, Energy and Commissioning Specialists, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Architects, and space Planners. The facilities capital and operating expenditures are in the range of $100M for the University’s $2.0 billion assets under management. The 20-year Capital spending plan envisions $4.0 billion of new investment highlighted by uOttawa launch of project Top Shelf, a $300 million capital investment to build a new facility for the Faculty of Health Sciences at uOttawa’s River Campus, as well as a tower at the Roger Guidon campus to house uOttawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Center (AMRC).

Position purpose:
Reporting to the Manager, this position is responsible to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various mechanical devices and heating, aeration, air conditioning and their auxiliary systems in facilities across campus in order to achieve optimum life span of equipment.


Applicants with a TSSA 4th Class Engineer certification are welcome to apply. The applicable salary range for this classification is $37.41–$38.99 per hour.


In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform physical inspections of building service rooms and areas both interior and exterior
  • Verify daily environmental controls and ensures readings are within accepted standards. 
  • Perform periodic and seasonal preventive maintenance tasks and minor repairs. 
  • Perform mechanical maintenance such as filter and belt changing, greasing, etc. 

What you will bring:

  • Valid Third Class Operating Engineer license issued by TSSA
  • Experience in operating and maintaining building systems
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills with desire to exceed customer expectations
  • Strong work ethics with capability to work independently or work together as part of a team
  • Sound knowledge of safety procedures
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail with ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and manuals
  • Working knowledge of building HVAC systems including air conditioning, refrigeration and electrical and mechanical equipment controls and systems
  • Ability to strictly comply with the Technical Standards and Safety Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations, as well as relevant University policies
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, on a ladder or scaffold at various heights- Bending and Lifting Required; Lifting under 30 kg
