We're looking for a Senior Product Designer to join us on a fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave for 11 months. You'll design accessible, easy-to-use digital products across a range of platforms, applying UX and design best practice to deliver new features and improvements across our product portfolio. You'll need excellent design skills and a passion for creating meaningful experiences that make a difference for our users.

Reporting to the Product Design Lead, you'll work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team of Product Designers, User Experience Researchers, Content Designers, Product Managers, Software Engineers and Learning Managers to create digital products that support learners and educators around the world.

You'll join an agile product team that works in Cambridge and remotely across the UK. We use tools such as monday.com, GitHub Projects, Figma and Slack to collaborate effectively.

We work hard to make sure that the Foundation is a place where everyone is supported to do the best work of their careers. We have a flexible and collaborative approach to all aspects of our work. If you're the right person for the job, we’ll make it work for you, and you can be confident that you’ll be joining an exceptional team of people who care about our mission and each other.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the user-centred design process from discovery to delivery, collaborating with a cross-disciplinary product team to create meaningful, engaging and delightful user experiences.
  • Work closely with user researchers to develop a deep understanding of users' needs and motivations, using these insights to inform design decisions.
  • Contribute to product strategy and planning alongside product and engineering leads, bringing user insights and facilitating design thinking workshops to align on goals.
  • Test designs regularly with users and iterate based on feedback, keeping user needs at the centre of the design process.
  • Clearly communicate and confidently present ideas, user flows, designs, prototypes and other assets to tell compelling stories and solve a diverse range of user needs.
  • Actively contribute to the evolution and maintenance of our design system, championing its value and encouraging consistent adoption across teams.
  • Advocate for accessibility and use the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code to design products that are accessible, appropriate and safe for young people and volunteers.
  • Inspire others through curiosity, mentoring teammates and bringing fresh perspectives to strengthen our design practice.
  • Build strong relationships, facilitate workshops and events with partners, our users and agencies, championing design and user experience.

Requirements

We recognise that everyone has the potential for growth. We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they have some, but not necessarily all, of the experience and personal attributes listed here.

  • Significant experience as a digital product designer, leading the design of a range of digital products.
  • Deep understanding of user-centred design and UI design, with the experience to apply the right methods at the right time, to create delightful, on-brand experiences that meet a range of user needs.
  • Ability to give clear, actionable feedback and adapt your own approach in response to feedback from others.
  • Proactively takes on new challenges and is comfortable exploring new techniques and ways of working.
  • A supportive and collaborative team member, who takes ownership of delivering all design elements efficiently and on time.
  • Communicates openly and articulates ideas clearly and simply, both visually and verbally.
  • Collaborates effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and disciplines, facilitating workshops, prototyping ideas and contributing to planning.
  • Leads participatory design sessions with users, embedding co-design principles into their practice.

About Us

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is an independent charity with a global mission to enable all young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technologies.

We empower schools to teach computer science and AI literacy through free curricula, classroom resources, purpose built software tools, and professional development for teachers. We inspire young people to become tech creators through the world's largest networks of coding clubs. We undertake original research that informs our work and which we use to advance the field of computer science education more broadly.

All of our resources and learning experiences are available for anyone to use at no cost. We are particularly focused on creating opportunities for young people who experience educational disadvantage and those who come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in technology industries.

Over the past decade, we have supported hundreds of thousands of educators and tens of millions of students. We have teams in six countries (India, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa, the UK and US) and partnerships with mission-aligned non-profit organisations in over 60 countries.

We are at the forefront of the global educational movement to expand access to computer science education and AI literacy. You can learn more about our work in our latest Annual Review.

Our recruitment process

All of our workplaces are inclusive spaces where we want people to feel respected, valued, and able to do their best work. We are committed to building teams that bring together people with a broad range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. That starts with our recruitment process.

Here's what you can expect:

  • As part of your application, you will be asked to respond to a small number of questions that we will use to screen your eligibility for the role. You will also be asked to provide your CV.
  • Eligible applications will be reviewed by our recruitment team and the hiring manager. We review all applications for authenticity. While we embrace the use of AI tools to assist you, all content must genuinely represent your own work, and have been reviewed and personalised by you.
  • A small number of candidates will be invited to a phone call with the hiring manager.
  • The purpose of this call is to check our understanding of your application and to answer any questions you have.
  • We normally have two interviews, which will be with the hiring manager and at least one other colleague.
  • You will usually be asked to undertake a work-based assessment in advance of your interviews. This will be an opportunity for you to show how you would perform some part of the role. You will be given advance notice and clear instructions.
  • If you have any questions about or feel that you need any adjustments to the recruitment process, including adjustments for neurodiversity, please contact our People and Culture team at [email protected].

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Everyone appointed to a role at the Foundation will be required to undergo a background check to confirm that you are a suitable person to work with children. Further background checks will be made at regular intervals thereafter.

Über Raspberry Pi Foundation

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based educational charity with the mission to enable young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technologies.

Established in 2008 and first known for our product — the wildly successful Raspberry Pi computer — the Foundation has developed education programmes, learning experiences, and products that are helping millions of young people learn vital new knowledge and skills.

Through Code Club, we support the world’s largest network of free informal computing clubs for young people. Tens of thousands of educators have taken our online courses, and millions of people use our free online learning resources. To deepen our understanding of how young people learn about computing and how to create with digital technologies, we conduct academic research, and we use that knowledge to increase the impact of our work and advance the field of computing education.

Across all of our work, we work hard to engage young people who come from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the field of computing or who experience educational disadvantage. We work all over the world, with teams based in the UK, Ireland, North America, and India, and partnerships with mission-aligned organisations in over 40 countries. You can learn more about us on our careers page.

We are at the forefront of the global movement to help young people learn about computing and digital making. You can read more about our mission, values, and goals in our Annual Review 2023 and our Strategy 2022–2025.
