About Us

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. State Troopers are committed to protecting North Carolina's motoring public.

Description of Work

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is seeking a Program Coordinator to join our team. The Program Coordinator position answers complex questions from citizens, other state agencies and law enforcement agencies concerning inspection rules, regulations, laws and administrative codes. Provides administrative and customer support for the North Carolina Motor Vehicle Safety and Emissions Inspection Program and serves as a primary resource for information related to inspection requirements, rules, regulations, laws, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages uses MILES (Motor Vehicle Inspection Law Enforcement System), the State Automated Driver’s License System, the STARS (State Titling and Registration System), and other applicable DMV systems to research customer accounts, explain inspection-related registration issues, and investigate and clear Registration Denial Program blocks in accordance with established agency procedures.

  • Processes and updates records related to inspection stations, technicians, inspections, violations, suspensions, lockouts, reinstatements, and routine licensing actions.

  • Assists inspection station personnel with e-authorizations, e-buyer access, equipment concerns, refund requests, banking-information updates, and other routine program transactions. 

  • Reviews and analyzes targeted data and program documentation to identify potential inspection fraud, discrepancies, or other violations affecting the public. Matters requiring further review or enforcement action are documented and referred to the appropriate supervisor or enforcement personnel.

  • Supports efforts to identify, disclose, and prevent criminal activity related to state inspections.

Recruitment Range: $39,244-$54,580  Annually

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.   • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and general office equipment. 

  • Skills to effectively communicate both orally and in written format.

  • Ability to organize workload, prioritize completing assignments, and complete work accurately, efficiently and within established timelines.

  • Skill in providing professional, courteous, and effective customer service by telephone to the general public.

  • Skill in gathering, reviewing, analyzing, and clearly explaining information. 

  • Ability to accurately enter, update, and maintain electronic data.

  • Ability to recognize discrepancies, potential violations, or matters requiring additional review and refer those matters to appropriate supervisory personnel.

  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with external agencies, State Highway Patrol employees, and customers by fostering respectful, cooperative, and positive working relationships.

  • Basic knowledge of State Highway Patrol operations and polcies. Experience with programs used by members assigned to the Safety and Emissions Inspection Section, e.g.MILES, STARS, SADLS, etc.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Typical work schedule: Monday -Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
