Job Summary

STAFF NURSE / 36 HOURS / NIGHT SHIFT / VARIABLE / BWH NICU - CWN6

The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse licensed in Massachusetts who is responsible for planning, delivering, coordinating, and evaluating high-quality patient care in accordance with established Nursing Standards of Care and the Nursing Department’s Clinical Practice Manual. This role requires sound clinical judgment, initiative, strong communication skills, and the ability to care for patients with complex needs. The Registered Nurse assumes responsibility for the full nursing process—including assessment, care planning, implementation, evaluation, documentation, patient education, and discharge planning—and reports to the designated nurse manager or supervisor.

This position requires direct patient care.

Essential Responsibilities

Patient Care and Clinical Practice
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care for assigned patients.
• Prioritize care for patients with varying levels of acuity and complexity.
• Provide safe, efficient, evidence-based nursing care in accordance with hospital policies, standards, and procedures.
• Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of growth and development principles for the patient population served, including adult, geriatric, neonatal, or obstetric patients as applicable.
• Perform nursing procedures, administer medications, and use equipment safely and effectively.

Quality, Safety, and Documentation
• Document patient care clearly, accurately, completely, and in compliance with nursing documentation standards.
• Develop and update comprehensive care, education, and discharge plans using appropriate clinical data, interdisciplinary input, and community resources.
• Evaluate patient progress toward goals and revise plans of care as needed to support desired outcomes.
• Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.
• Apply infection prevention practices, including universal precautions and awareness of transmission risks.
• Participate in unit-based and organizational quality management and quality improvement initiatives.

Collaboration and Professional Practice
• Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, colleagues, and members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Collaborate with other disciplines to support coordinated, patient-centered care.
• Uphold the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and serve as a positive role model for peers and colleagues.
• Participate in unit goals, standards of care, committees, and initiatives, and share relevant information with peers.
• Support a cooperative team environment through flexibility with patient assignments, shift assignments, scheduling needs, and unit priorities.

Professional Development, Education, and Research
• Identify personal learning needs and pursue ongoing professional growth.
• Participate in unit-based and organizational education programs.
• Share knowledge and experience with colleagues and seek guidance when additional learning is needed.
• Apply nursing research findings to clinical practice and support nursing or medical research activities as appropriate.

Resource Stewardship and Unit Support
• Use time, materials, and resources effectively and economically.
• Support cost-effective delivery of care and demonstrate awareness of budgetary considerations.
• Accurately assess patient acuity when supporting staffing, transfer, and assignment decisions.
• Participate in the orientation of new staff, students, and others as appropriate.
• Provide input into clinical evaluations when appropriate and assume unit responsibilities in the absence of leadership personnel.
• Adhere to hospital and nursing policies, assist with policy interpretation, and recommend policy or procedure changes through appropriate channels.


 

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education and Licensure: Graduate of an approved nursing program with current registration as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required for newly licensed nurses.

Experience: Current Level II or Level III NICU experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications and Schedule: Membership in professional nursing organizations is recommended, and specialty certification is encouraged. Must be able to work every other weekend.
