Job Overview

The Assistant Director, First Generation Student Initiatives (STEM) is a one-year term position (renewable for up to three years pending external funding) in support of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) First Fellows Program. This role is uniquely structured: 50% of the effort is dedicated exclusively to supporting first-generation in the Regents STEM Scholars Program (RSSP), most of whom are in the First Fellows program, while the remaining 50% supports the general First Fellows cohort.

The Assistant Director provides holistic academic support and dedicated academic advising for all RSSP students as well as a dedicated caseload of CAS First Fellows in their sophomore through senior years. The incumbent functions as an administrator for program operations, provides one-on-one advising, facilitates community belonging, and teaches a one-credit course each semester. This role serves as a specialized link and resource between academic STEM requirements, medical school prerequisites, and the unique experiences of first-generation students with the aim to enhance belonging and the support the development of a scientific identity for RSSP students.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide one-on-one holistic advising to a cohort of first-gen STEM/Premed students, connecting their intellectual interests with their goals and sense of identity.

  • Support RRSP students and First Fellows in exploring co-curricular opportunities, internships, research, career pathways, and graduate programs.

  • Assist with the facilitation of select programmatic events, workshops, and signature RSSP (e.g., yearly welcome, end-of-year celebration, etc.) and First Fellows (e.g., community building gatherings, study breaks, etc.) experiences as needed.

  • Teach up to two sections of a 1-credit success seminar for First Fellows each semester.

  • Develop and update course content, assignments, and materials that reflect the lived experiences and academic development needs of first-generation students.

Work Interactions

The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Dean for First-Generation Student Initiatives with a dotted reporting line to the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Education. The Assistant Director works closely with both the First Fellows Leadership Team and the Director of RSSP; they also represent the program in interactions with units such as CSP, GSP, CMEA, OSEI, and the Cawley Career Center.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • An MA/MS in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Science Education, or a related field.

  • At least 3 years of experience in academic administration in higher education and academic advising.

  • Experience supporting first-generation College students and/or historically underserved students.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with STEM curricula and/or Pre-medical track requirements.

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.

  • Experience partnering with student services units across a decentralized campus.

  • A growth and collaborative mindset with an eye for process improvement.

  • Ability to navigate and problem-solve within a complex organizational structure with tact and diplomacy.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
