As a Lead Principal Solution Architect, you set the technical direction on our most strategic banking engagements and make sure ambitious solutions actually ship. You are equally at home in deep architecture reviews with a client’s Chief Architect and in executive conversations with the CTO or COO. With years of designing large web-scale platforms behind you, you hold the full picture of a multi-year transformation without losing the detail. To our implementation teams, you are the trusted escalation point. To customers and partners, you are the senior voice they want in the room when the stakes are highest.

Meet the job

You take lead architect responsibility on the largest and most complex programs in the region. You translate business ambition into an architecture that holds up under scrutiny: integration, security, performance, scalability, resilience, and long-term maintainability. You shape the target state, the transition path, and the trade-offs the customer needs to understand before they commit.
You work across the full deal and delivery cycle. In pre-sales you partner with Sales and Solutions Engineering to win strategic opportunities, owning the architecture story from discovery through contract. In delivery you stay engaged at the moments that matter: inception, major design decisions, and the hard problems that surface mid-program. You do not manage a team of architects, but you raise the bar for the ones around you through design reviews, reference architectures, and worked examples.

You also contribute to how Backbase sells and delivers at scale. That includes producing reference designs, patterns, and points of view that other architects reuse, feeding field learnings back to Product and Engineering, and representing Backbase architecture in senior customer forums, analyst briefings, and partner conversations. Travel is significant, especially during inception and at key program milestones.

How about you?
        •       You have a decade or more of hands-on experience designing large Java platforms in production;
        •       Spring, Maven, and a modern CI/CD toolchain are second nature to you;
        •       You have strong, experience-backed opinions on Service Oriented and Micro-Services Architectures and when each is the right call;
        •       You understand modern front-end delivery: JavaScript frameworks, MVC patterns, and REST API design including RAML and/or OpenAPI;
        •       When we ask you about architectural frameworks, you reach for them instinctively rather than looking them up;
        •       You have worked deeply with Enterprise Integration Patterns and integration frameworks;
        •       You have operational depth across application servers, databases, load balancers, and the rest of the stack that keeps a high-availability deployment healthy;
        •       You have excellent written and spoken English and can hold a room from senior engineer to C-level.

We will be extra happy if you:
        •       Have delivered solutions for large financial services organisations, especially retail or commercial banking;
        •       Have shipped at scale on public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP) with containers and Kubernetes in production;
        •       Are fluent in patterns like CQRS, event sourcing, and event-driven integration;
        •       Have hands-on experience with API gateways, integration platforms, and identity systems in a banking context;
        •       Have spoken at industry events or published on banking architecture topics.

The Job in short

The Field CTO is the highest individual contributor role in Customer Advisory. No direct reports. No management agenda. Just the deepest technical credibility in the room, applied to Backbase's most consequential customer relationships.

Externally, you carry the Field CTO title because that is what you are: a CTO-caliber technologist who sits on the customer side of the table. You earn the trust of bank CTOs and CIOs not by presenting slides, but by thinking alongside them — whiteboarding architecture at whatever level the conversation demands, challenging assumptions, and helping them see a path forward that they couldn't map on their own. Your authority is entirely earned. It comes from the quality of your thinking, your track record in banking technology, and your ability to hold your own in any room, from the data center to the boardroom.

Beyond individual accounts, you shape how the industry thinks. You publish. You speak at conferences. You brief Gartner and Forrester. You feed real market intelligence back into Backbase's Product and R&D organization in a way that changes what gets built. When a deal is complex, high-stakes, and needs someone who can speak both architecture and strategy, you are the one who gets the call.

Key Responsibilities

● Own the technical relationship with C-level executives — CTO, CIO, CDO — at. Backbase's most strategic banking customers. Build trusted advisor relationships that outlast individual deal cycles.

● Lead the technical dimension of high-stakes engagements where your input directly influences whether a bank commits to Backbase's platform.

● Get genuinely hands-on with architecture. Whiteboard end-state platform designs spanning the full Backbase stack, integrated into the customer's existing landscape — at whatever level of depth the situation demands.

● Turn the hardest technical objections into wins by combining architectural fluency with business context. Know when a concern is real and when it's a negotiation.

● Drive competitive differentiation in head-to-head evaluations. Understand the competition deeply enough to dismantle their pitch without ever naming it.

● Represent Backbase externally at industry conferences, analyst briefings, and executive roundtables. Be someone the market recognizes and wants to hear from.

● Publish thought leadership on digital banking modernization, platform architecture, and the intersection of AI, cloud-native, and composable banking — content that opens doors and shapes conversations before a sales cycle even starts.

● Translate customer challenges and market signals into actionable product input. Maintain a direct line into Product and R&D that makes Backbase's roadmap sharper and more defensible.

● Raise the technical bar across the Solutions Architecture community — not through management, but through the quality of your work, your standards, and your willingness to go deep alongside Principal and Senior SAs on the problems that matter most.

● Stay ahead of technology trends in banking — open banking, AI/ML, cloud transformation, regulatory tech — and translate them into Backbase's competitive positioning before the market does.

You will carry your own sales quota within the North America sales team and deliver digital banking transformation opportunities with net-new customers, adding to a growing list of active Backbase customers. Based on your quota you will set objectives and plan accordingly to achieve targets. Backbase is expanding and there is no doubt that we have the best solution in our niche market. Being a Sr. Sales Executive at Backbase is an exciting and challenging role. This is an ideal position if you have 8-10+ years of successful sales with focus on building relationships and creating opportunities with new and existing customers. Your professional DNA is that of a highly influential advisor with a focus on enterprise SaaS software in Financial Services. This position offers you to work in a flexible, no-nonsense, informal and fast-paced working environment, enabling and empowering you to grow as a sales professional. In this position you will report directly to the Regional Vice President of Sales.

Finally, you build close relationships with your customers to understand their business drivers and understand how to establish buy-in at all levels (sales management, delivery leads and senior/executive management). You will identify and qualify new enterprise software sales opportunities with Banking and Financial Service customers and effectively run a sales cycle to reach and exceed your goals.

How about you

Scope of the role will include:
● This is a quota carrying role in which you will identify and close opportunities for Backbase business primarily with net-new customer accounts and secondary opportunity to expand existing customer relationships;
● Managing and closing large software agreements ($1M+ ARR);
● Forecasting and managing net-new opportunities from identification to close;
● Leading customers to have value-focused digital banking strategies;
● Establishing a trusted advisor role with banking and financial institution customers;
● Aggregating and collecting requirements from customers and craft the business case for investments in digital banking transformation;
● Supporting Backbase's goal of building digital banking leadership;
● Other activities as required to fulfill the business objectives.

In order to really own this role, we think you’ll need:
● Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
● 8-10+ years experience in a quota carrying role;
● Track record of exceeding quota;
● 5+ years experience in digital banking;
● Ability to reverse engineer business objectives to reach your goals;
● Eagerness to figure out tough problems for your customers.
