ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a senior leader to oversee some of the most dynamic and essential coverage areas core to Vox. The Editorial Director is a senior newsroom leader who oversees the Future Perfect team, as well as our Climate, Health, Down to Earth writers, and our biweekly ideas-driven video podcast The Gray Area. This person will set editorial strategy for these teams, manage editors and writers, and help chart the future of Vox’s coverage on these subjects. The Future Perfect section covers the world through a distinctive prism: What are the best ways to do good in the world? We shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals. We bring rigorous, evidence-driven journalism to some of the most consequential questions of our time — from the rapid advance of artificial intelligence to the slow-motion crisis of factory farming, from the promise of global health breakthroughs to the catastrophic risks that threaten civilization itself.

We’re looking for someone who combines deep editorial judgment with genuine intellectual engagement in Future Perfect’s subject areas — someone who can pressure-test a thesis about AI governance as readily as they can sharpen a lede about pandemic preparedness — as well as real experience in science, health, biodiversity and climate journalism. The right candidate will be a strong people manager and a strategic thinker, but above all, they’ll be someone who cares about getting the most important stories right.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Set and drive the editorial direction for Future Perfect, Climate, Health, and Down to Earth — deciding which topics to double down on, which approaches merit greater emphasis, and where to take creative risks.
• Shape stories and coverage plans to ensure they are rigorous, compelling, and aligned with Vox’s editorial strategy and audience goals. You should be able to spot when a piece needs a sharper argument, a stronger evidence base, or a fundamentally different frame.
• Work closely with the executive editor and the managing editor for audience and membership to ensure editorial priorities connect to Vox’s broader strategy in the membership era.
• Provide editorial guidance for The Gray Area video podcast team, including assisting in selecting guests and strategizing on interview approaches.
• Identify gaps and opportunities in coverage, and help facilitate collaborations across Vox’s text, audio, and video teams.
• Manage editors, giving substantive editorial feedback, coaching career growth, and building a culture of high standards and mutual trust.
• Support the development of early-career reporters alongside more experienced staff.
• Serve as a member of the editorial leadership team, contributing to broader newsroom strategy and decision-making.
• Champion Vox’s internal culture by bringing teams together on cross-functional and cross-platform projects — very much including video and audio — organizing newsroom brainstorms, and modeling collaborative leadership.
• Partner with the chief of staff and director of development on grant-funded editorial projects, including contributing editorially to proposals.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• At least 5 years of full-time editing experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom or equivalent editorial environment, with significant management experience. Experience managing editors (i.e., managing managers) is a strong plus.
• Strong editorial judgment and intellectual range. You can help a reporter move from a promising question to a sharp nut graf, from a messy draft to a coherent argument, and from “interesting” to “compelling and useful.” You’re as comfortable editing a deeply reported global health feature as a provocative ideas piece about AI.
• A clear philosophy on managing and developing editors and writers, especially the ability to give direct feedback while building trust and momentum. You know how to help people get better at their jobs, not just produce better copy on any given day.
• Genuine intellectual engagement with Future Perfect’s core areas — emerging technology and AI, philanthropy, global health, global development, animal welfare, and catastrophic risk. You don’t need to be an expert in all of them, but you should have strong instincts about what matters in at least some, and a genuine appetite for the rest.
• Strategic thinking about editorial coverage in the context of audience, membership, and sustainability. You can think clearly about what topics and approaches serve both the mission and the business.
• An ability and willingness to work across multiple mediums and platforms — text, audio, and video — and to partner closely with podcast, video, and audience teams in a highly collaborative setting
• An organized, self-starting approach. You can manage multiple teams, competing priorities, and shifting timelines without losing the thread. You’re proactive about solving problems before they escalate.
• Comfort with the realities of web publishing: you understand urgency and speed without sacrificing accuracy and care.

Future Perfect covers the world through a particular prism: What are the best ways to do good in this world? What are the stories that are both important — meaning they affect large numbers of people and animals — yet are undercovered by the media at large? And what are the solutions to those problems that have actual traction in the world we live in? 

Inspired in part by the philosophy of effective altruism, Future Perfect strives to shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals.

Since its launch in 2018, Future Perfect has developed a loyal following for its idiosyncratic, mission-driven approach to news. Among our key subject areas include global poverty and public health, the catastrophic and existential threats that we face, and animal welfare and factory farming. We cover the philosophies and practices surrounding philanthropy and major companies, and the moral and ethical questions that underpin individual and policy choices. Our journalism is rigorously evidence-based, prizing data and research over vibes and anecdotes. We’re not afraid to go against prevailing media narratives if we believe they’re ultimately false, and we’re looking for writers who are willing and eager to do so. 

True to the name of the vertical, we constantly ask ourselves: In 10, 20, 30 years, what will we look back on and wish we devoted more time covering? Then we go ahead and do those stories today.

This spring, thanks to a generous grant, we’re hiring a new class of three fellows to help us ensure Future Perfect is telling the most important stories to our audience and approaching those stories with nuance and discernment. The fellowship is a one-year, full-time position.

The Future Perfect Fellowship is a perfect opportunity for emerging journalism talent, especially with expertise in or at least real enthusiasm for our key areas, like animal welfare, AI, biotechnology and global development/health. We’re also open to more established, early to mid-career writers who have shown expertise in some of our subjects or wish to make a switch and focus on them, and can benefit from a year working and publishing with our team. 

The fellowship will be a year-long program that will involve opportunities to publish regularly on Future Perfect. Aside from intensive feedback from editors, fellows will also have dedicated mentors, exclusive networking opportunities, and skills training sessions featuring journalists from Vox Media and other outlets. This fellowship should be considered an opportunity to grow as a writer.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Previous writing and reporting experience, especially on or around our core subject areas. This can include professional publication, college papers, non-profit writing, even online newsletters. What we’re looking for is evidence of original thinking and writing skill.
• A demonstrated passion for and familiarity with Future Perfect’s areas of coverage, including artificial intelligence; global poverty and global health; pandemics and other catastrophic threats to humanity; animal welfare and factory farming; moral philosophy; effective altruism more broadly; and philanthropy. A major factor is being able to understand and articulate what makes Future Perfect’s approach different from that of other verticals in subjects like climate change or health that may cross over with our material. Bonus points for demonstrated expertise or previous work in one or more of the above subjects, especially artificial intelligence and global health policy — two areas where we expect to double down on.
• An interest in explanatory journalism of the kind long-practiced by Vox.
• Tenacious curiosity and a creative approach to storytelling, including an interest in telling stories about the world through the Future Perfect lens.

What you’ll do:

• Produce distinct Future Perfect content
• Participate in story meetings and pitch fresh ideas
• Work with editors to shape and improve content
• Participate in skill shares, training, and mentorship opportunities

Vox is looking for an innovative animator and motion designer to join Unexplainable, to help conceptualize and create a fresh visual look for Vox’s Unexplainable video podcast. Currently an audio-only podcast, this person will work closely with the Unexplainable team and Vox’s Art Director to develop a playful visual look and graphics package for the video version of the show, creating graphics and animations  for each week’s episode. 

They will have professional expertise using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Strong editorial judgement, superb communication skills, impeccable organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail are critical for this role, as you will work closely with editorial leadership, video producers, and freelancers to elevate our storytelling through compelling design and motion graphics while maintaining Vox style and standards. 

This person will be a self starter and creative thinker who wants to experiment with new storytelling formats. We want someone who’s not afraid to try new things and bring fresh ideas to the position. 

This is a part-time, benefits-eligible role, working 20 hours/week, on a one-year contract

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Design visuals for Unexplainable weekly video podcast episodes, working closely with show production teams to deliver weekly episodes by deadline 
• Working closely with the Unexplainable team and with oversight from Vox’s Art Director to develop a visual look and graphics package for the show,
• Create original assets and templates for videos and video podcasts. 
• Collaborate closely with editorial leadership, Vox’s other art director, and video producers.
• Provide art direction and graphic supervision for video packages for visual clarity and adhering to the Vox style guide.
• Adhere to all journalistic and legal standards at all times.
• Complete additional duties as assigned.

WHO YOU ARE

We’re looking for a creative, enthusiastic designer with a passion for Vox’s explanatory mission.

• 3-4 years of graphic design and animation experience with a portfolio demonstrating strong, relevant work. 
• A passion for Vox’s mission of helping audiences understand what really matters.
• Deep familiarity with Vox’s video voice and style.
• Superb design taste and attention to detail and accuracy.
• Experience and comfort with providing visual feedback.
• Experience in video editing.
• Experience in finding and collecting relevant archival footage and material.
• Creative drive to explore new approaches to visual storytelling.
• Awareness of what media competitors are doing in this space.
• Strong communication, organizational and time-management skills. 
• Collaborative team player who will enjoy working across the organization. 
• Fluent in Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator with a familiarity in Premiere Pro.
