THE ROLE

At Thrive Market, our Product Engineering team drives meaningful impact for both our members and the business by delivering innovative solutions that shape every part of the e-commerce grocery journey. From crafting seamless cart and checkout flows to enhancing recurring shipments and personalization, our engineers ensure grocery shopping is simple, rewarding, and trustworthy.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of our product engineering pods. In this role, you’ll guide a team of talented engineers to build high-quality, high-impact product features that directly improve how our members shop, save, and return to Thrive Market. Your leadership will be instrumental in translating company strategy into technical execution, elevating the customer experience while driving measurable business results.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, providing regular feedback, actionable growth plans, and addressing performance issues constructively
Build and retain a high-performing engineering team owning team-level outcomes and OKRs, creating a culture of accountability, initiative, and continuous improvement
Partner with Product, Design, and Analytics to define priorities and deliver high-quality features that improve customer experience and drive business outcomes
Ensure predictable, on-time delivery by establishing clear processes, tracking progress with metrics, and communicating proactively with stakeholders
Guide technical decisions within your pod, promoting scalable, maintainable, and reliable designs and systems
Uphold quality standards through code reviews, design reviews, testing, and automation to ensure reliability and customer trust
Proactively identify opportunities and risks, driving initiatives that improve engineering effectiveness and long-term scalability

QUALIFICATIONS

2+ years in an engineering management and people leadership role, supervising engineers, conducting performance reviews, mentoring, and managing underperformance
10+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant technical contributions and ownership of services or components
Experience delivering software with predictability and quality, including design reviews, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring
Proven track record of delivering outcomes aligned to business or product goals (OKRs, metrics-based)
Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders (Product, Design, Marketing, etc.), communicating both technical and non-technical perspectives
Demonstrated ability to guide architecture & design conversations, ensure maintainability and scalability of systems
Strong organizational and process skills: setting predictable delivery cadence, removing blockers, improving team productivity
Ownership mindset: ability to proactively identify areas for improvement, take accountability for team outcomes, and drive change
Technical depth: able to review code/design, understand trade-offs, and influence technical direction even if not coding daily

PREFERRED:

Prior experience within scaling engineering orgs (i.e.. evolving processes)
Domain expertise in e-commerce or similar
Experience working with legacy systems
Experience defining and owning quality metrics, reliability, or SLOs/SLIs in production systems
Demonstrated ability to lead technical transformation (e.g. re-architecture or modernization efforts)
Experience influencing beyond one’s own team—driving initiatives across org
Background in leading teams to deliver products using Agile principles and Scrum events (sprints, retrospectives, daily standups, etc.) Comment end

The Role

Thrive Market is looking for a Director of Applied AI & Machine Learning to lead the company’s ML organization. Thrive Market exists to make healthy and sustainable living easy and affordable. That mission is fundamentally a personalization problem, connecting the right member with the right products, at the right moment, in a way that builds lasting habits and loyalty. Machine learning is the most powerful tool available to solve that problem at scale. This role sits at the intersection of applied science, engineering, and product strategy.

Thrive Market is moving toward a dynamic layout architecture. Rather than relying on static templates and generic carousels, the vision is for every member to see a personalized storefront; product recommendations, search results, promotions, and content all dynamically assembled by ML-powered systems. This leader will be the driving force behind making that vision a reality.

You will lead a team of Senior Data Scientists and also a group of cross-functional engineers to deliver ML-assisted shopping from ML model to customer experiments. The vision is for models to move from development to live experiments in weeks rather than quarters. This role would oversee the hiring of multiple team members (Sr. Data Scientist, ML Data Engineer, Fullstack Engineer, Mobile Engineer). This is a hands-on leadership role: you will set the technical direction, build and scale the team, partner deeply with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders, and ensure ML is embedded across the platform, not siloed as a service function.

Requirements

ML Strategy & Organizational Leadership

Define and execute the ML roadmap for Thrive Market, aligning machine learning investments with business priorities across search, discovery, personalization, growth, and operations.
Build, scale, and mentor a high-performing ML team spanning data science, ML engineering, and analytics.
Serve as the primary ML voice in product and engineering leadership forums, translating business objectives into ML-solvable problems and communicating technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Personalization & Ranking Systems

Own the strategy and execution of Thrive Market's server-driven personalization, driving dynamically assembled, per-member experiences across all major site surfaces.
Define and evolve the overall recommendations strategy - both global (site-wide signals and ranking) and localized (surface-specific, contextual, and intent-driven), ensuring recommendations compound in relevance and business impact over time.
Own the ML search strategy end-to-end: relevance, ranking, personalization, and retrieval to continuously improve member experience and engagement through iterative modeling and experimentation.

ML Decision Systems & Business Impact

Develop and evolve production ML decision systems across member lifecycle, demand forecasting, and segmentation to be used across finance, growth, and operations to guide domain strategy, capital allocation, and retention.
Partner with cross-functional teams (Product, Marketing, Merchandising, Finance) to identify high-impact ML applications and ensure models are integrated into business workflows, not just prototyped.

ML Platform & Infrastructure

Strengthen ML platform foundations: model deployment, feature pipelines, validation frameworks, monitoring, and experiment velocity.
Drive adoption of best practices for ML reliability—automated testing, model health monitoring, graceful degradation, and observability.
Enable faster iteration cycles across the ML team through tooling, infrastructure investment, and process improvements.

Applied GenAI & Innovation

Lead applied GenAI exploration, including prototyping LLM-powered assistants for shopping, product discovery, and personalization workflows.
Evaluate emerging ML techniques and tooling, maintaining a pragmatic lens on what delivers member and business value versus what is experimental.

Qualifications

Must-Have

8+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or applied ML engineering, with at least 3 years leading ML teams in a production environment.
Deep technical expertise in search, retrieval, ranking, and/or recommendation systems, with demonstrated experience building multi-stage ML pipelines at scale.
Proven track record of building and scaling an ML organization—hiring, mentoring, setting technical standards, and establishing team culture.
Experience designing and deploying ML systems that directly drive business outcomes (revenue, engagement, retention, operational efficiency) in an e-commerce or consumer-facing platform.
Strong cross-functional partnership skills—able to work effectively with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Finance, and executive leadership.
Experience with ML platform and infrastructure patterns: feature stores, model serving, experimentation frameworks, and monitoring.
Comfort operating as both a strategic leader and a hands-on technical contributor, especially in the early stages of building out the team.

Strong Signals

Experience with server-driven or backend-driven UI/personalization architectures.
Background in e-commerce, marketplace, or subscription-based platforms.
Experience with NLP/semantic search (e.g., BERT-based encoders, dense retrieval).
Familiarity with pLTV modeling, demand forecasting, or similar decision-science applications.
Hands-on experience with LLMs and applied GenAI in production or near-production contexts.

JOB INFORMATION

Compensation Description - The base salary range for this position is $250,000 - $300,000/Per Year.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and geographic location.

This position requires traveling to our HQ office in Los Angeles, California, twice a year for all-company summits; once in the summer and once in the winter.

THE ROLE

At Thrive Market, our Product Engineering team collaborates closely with Product Managers and Feature teams to craft innovative solutions that elevate our e-commerce grocery experience. We are seeking a Senior Engineer to operate and elevate a pod in our product engineering organization. In this role, you'll work with talented engineers to create impactful product features that delight our members and drive revenue. Your work will heavily influence how our customers shop, save, and return to Thrive Market, making grocery shopping seamless and rewarding.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop REST and JSON API services that enable new customer experiences
Decompose existing services into scalable microservices where needed
Build services that scale horizontally and provide low uniform latency as demand increases, leveraging the right tools (languages, databases, serverless, distributed streaming, etc)
Working with Golang, Python, PHP, Java, AWS, Kafka
Test-driven development from the get-go, to protect customer experience and build speed and reliability into the development process
Incorporate meaningful metrics into new services and functionality you build and evangelize them
Work with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues and restore function
Work closely with the product team and innovate game-changing ideas for the CustomerCreate discussions around architecture and code design choices where appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years developing end-to-end high-traffic responsive cross-platform sites

THE ROLE

At Thrive Market our ML team works closely with our Product Managers and Feature teams to enable experiences that define how our members shop, save, and stay loyal. This is a foundational hire for a team focused on enabling shopping powered by ML across our products; meaning you won't just be inheriting a slice of the product as it, you'll be redefining how ML turbo charges across its breadth.

As a Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack, you'll operate across the full stack; from designing robust backend services that power the delivery of our ML systems all the way to delivering it through elegant frontend experiences. You'll also contribute to our PHP and Magento codebase and evolve those systems into the future. If you're energized by ambiguity, care deeply about how to empower customers through ML, and want your architectural decisions to actually matter; this is the role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and implement scalable backend services and front end components that enable new customer experiences powered by AI-assisted shopping and site personalization
Build and maintain frontend features in React and Next.js that are fast, accessible, and polished at every interaction.
Work comfortably in our PHP/Magento codebase while actively contributing to its modernization..
Decompose legacy monolithic systems into maintainable, horizontally scalable service oriented architectures where it makes sense.
Apply strong software development principles and practice test-driven development from the start; unit tests, integration tests, and meaningful observability are table stakes here.
Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Data in the Product Triad model; translating business problems into technical specs and realistic sprint goals.
Instrument new services with meaningful metrics; own the SLAs for what your pod ships.
Elevate the team through thoughtful code review, architectural discussions, and documentation of best practices.
Work with cross-functional partners to diagnose and resolve production issues and restore system health quickly.

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of hands-on experience in full-stack development, with meaningful time across both the web and backend stack.
Strong proficiency in backend systems and languages such as Python, Java, PHP or similar
Proficiency with React.js, TypeScript, and Next.js; solid understanding of SSR, ISR, SSG, and CSR tradeoffs.
Experience building and maintaining REST and RPC APIs and services at scale.
Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases; understands when to use which and why.
Working knowledge of AWS services (Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, etc.) and serverless patterns.
Experience with observability and monitoring tools (New Relic, Datadog, or similar) to maintain SLA and error rate targets.

THE ROLE

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and build native mobile features in Swift/SwiftUI (iOS) and Kotlin (Android) that are fast, accessible, and polished at every interaction.
Integrate with backend services and REST/RPC APIs to deliver personalized, data-driven product experiences on mobile.
Work within legacy Objective-C and Java mobile codebases while actively driving their modernization toward current frameworks and patterns.
Decompose tightly coupled mobile architectures into modular, testable, and maintainable components.
Apply strong software development principles and practice test-driven development from the start; unit tests, UI tests, and meaningful observability are table stakes.
Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Data in the Product Triad model; translate business problems into technical specs and realistic sprint goals.
Instrument mobile experiences with meaningful metrics; own reliability and performance SLAs for what your pod ships.
Elevate the team through thoughtful code review, architectural discussions, and documentation of mobile best practices.
Work with cross-functional partners to diagnose and resolve production issues, including crash triage and release health monitoring.

QUALIFICATIONS

7+ years of hands-on mobile engineering experience (or equivalent scope at a hyperscaling company), with meaningful production time on both iOS and Android.
Strong proficiency in Swift and SwiftUI for iOS development; solid Kotlin experience for Android.
Experience building and consuming REST and RPC APIs from mobile clients at scale.
Working knowledge of mobile CI/CD pipelines, app distribution (TestFlight, Play Console), and release management.
Familiarity with relational and non-relational data persistence on mobile (Core Data, Room, Realm, SQLite) and when to use each.
Experience with mobile observability and monitoring tools (Firebase Crashlytics, Datadog, New Relic, or similar) to maintain crash-free rate and performance targets.
Comfort working in and modernizing legacy mobile codebases; Objective-C on iOS, Java on Android; you don’t need a greenfield project to do your best work.
Strong communication skills; can articulate tradeoffs clearly and influence architectural decisions across teams.
Experience with agile development and collaborative Git workflows.

NICE TO HAVE

E-commerce or high-traffic consumer-facing mobile product experience.
Experience with server-driven UI patterns or feature flagging on mobile (LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, or similar).
Familiarity with on-device ML frameworks (Core ML, ML Kit) or integrating ML-powered features into mobile apps.
Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) or other cross-platform strategies.
Working knowledge of AWS services and serverless patterns as they relate to mobile backends.
Experience with A/B testing frameworks on mobile.
Familiarity with accessibility standards and tooling for iOS and Android (VoiceOver, TalkBack).

JOB INFORMATION

Compensation Description - The base salary range for this position is $165,000 - $190,000/Per Year.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and geographic location.
Total Compensation includes Base Salary, Stock Options, Health & Wellness Benefits, Flexible PTO, and more!
This position requires traveling to our HQ office in Los Angeles, California, twice a year for all-company summits; once in the summer and once in the winter.
