About the Role:
A Photo Editor for The New York Times has a creative eye and an innovative approach to visual formats and mobile-focused presentations. You should bring thoughtful technical skills and journalistic judgment to join a team creating visual journalism—still and video— for breaking news, features and enterprise stories for on- and off-platform publishing.
The primary duties of the job are to conceptualize and assign photography and video for the New York Times' Washington D.C. report, and to select and publish images and video for multiple platforms of The New York Times. You will work across a range of beats covered by the bureau, including the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the intelligence agencies, national security, domestic policy, healthcare and other issues.
You will assign and research a wide array of news and feature photographs and video, working productively with staff photographers, freelance photographers, wire services, agencies and all other sources of pictures, as well as editors, designers, and reporters in the newsroom. You will engage our staff and freelance photographers to identify and develop pitches with strong visual potential, producing strong photographic, video and multimedia displays with an eye toward innovative digital story forms and presentations.
You have a strong demonstrable experience with multimedia, journalism and photography of all kinds and you have a comprehensive understanding of the DC bureau's coverage areas and how to effectively cover them in distinctive ways. The Election Analytics team produces flagship, standard-setting elections coverage, including the live, election night statistical model known as the Needle and The New York Times/Siena Poll. Both of those efforts rely on one of the most comprehensive election data operations in media, with the voter file at the core.
We’re just scratching the surface of all the journalistic products we could produce with the voter file and the rest of the data we collect — absentee files, precinct-level results, live turnout figures, poll results and more. But our tooling has not always kept pace with our ambitions.
You will be responsible for owning this mass of data end-to-end, for ensuring that we have reliable, automated pipelines for putting the data into consistent formats and for validating that the data is being transformed correctly. You will also be responsible for the tooling to work with the data, ensuring that more data journalists can leverage it without the existing steep learning curve. (We are an R shop, though prior R experience is not a necessity.) If you like solving problems for which there is little, if any, documented precedent, this would be a fun job for you.
Your work will ensure that we can even more regularly tell compelling stories about voting patterns and elections, whether they take the form of articles or evolve into new products that deliver as much insight as our polls and the Needle. You will be a key part of producing these stories and products, working with other journalists to understand the data that is available and transforming the data into new formats as needed.
You will also contribute to other areas of our elections coverage based on your skills and interest, including opportunities to pursue original reporting on your own and to collaborate on stories, graphics and tools for readers based on government, polling and other types of data.

The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor to drive news coverage on its Science desk. Above all, you will need to possess excellent news judgment and a fast metabolism for executing on ideas quickly, with the ability to inspire (and cajole) a large group of reporters on a wide range of complex beats.
In partnership with the desk head and deputy, the Science news editor will launch reporters on stories quickly and manage evolving coverage, often in collaboration with other desks and the top management of The Times. The Science news editor will need to stay abreast of the desk’s competitors and be determined to beat them, not just on quality but on speed. We are seeking a real space ace, someone with significant experience as either an editor or a reporter in covering multiple aspects of the beat. About the Role:

Times Opinion is looking for an experienced and innovative editor to lead our biggest department-wide projects as deputy editorial director.
The Special Projects team shapes and executes the department's most ambitious collaborations that bring together expertise and input from all parts of Opinion. Some of our projects have focused on homelessness, politics, climate change, covid and the intersection of science, law and commerce. The subjects and story forms we produce vary wildly — from long-form pieces to immersive projects that span text, video, audio and graphics — but the constant is the excellence we strive for in every corner of our journalism.
You will be responsible for guiding and producing Opinion's defining works. That requires excellent editorial judgment to channel groundbreaking ideas and arguments into journalism that can meet and challenge the reader, whatever the form. You will elevate the perspectives of others, while bringing their own vision to the team's work.
Developing the ideas that drive this journalism is key, so the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a deep level of curiosity and the willingness to chase down promising story ideas, wherever they find them, to help Times Opinion continue to set the agenda.
A proven track record of overseeing large-scale journalistic projects that have demonstrated impact is a must.
