This is a 2-month full-time position. Please note that this is not a thesis internship and EU citizenship is required.

In a nutshell
As a Machine Learning Engineer at Picnic, you will design and deploy intelligent systems to solve our company’s biggest challenges. Beyond building models, you will productionize them with strong monitoring and seamless integration into operational systems. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders to ensure the right problems are solved and that solutions deliver real-world impact.
All using high quality data. Our data is registered, logged, and consistent, enabling you to focus on building and improving models rather than cleaning data. This role combines the skills of a consultant, software engineer, and applied mathematician.

You will definitely:
- Identify and execute improvement possibilities together with other ML Engineers and (product) analysts
- Collaborate on your project from inception to production, to continuous improvement
- Develop tools and enhancements for our cloud-based Machine Learning platform
You could work on various projects and fields, such as:
- Demand forecasting: delivery, article, trip volumes, used Picnic-wide
- Fraud detection: helping us keep troublemakers out of our store
- Recommendation systems: generating useful in-app grocery suggestions
- Search and ranking: helping our customers find exactly what they need
- Predicting delivery drop-off times: making sure we’re on-time at every customer’s door

We’re looking for
- Master’s degree or higher in AI, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in data science or applied machine learning
- Excellent communication skills, you can clearly explain complex ideas in non-technical terms and enjoy working closely with business stakeholders to solve problems together
- Experienced in designing, deploying, and maintaining production ML systems, with solid software engineering and ML principles
- Strong Python and SQL skills
- Able to define the long-term vision and technical architecture for ML solutions within your domain

As Tech Lead, you’ll lead a team of ML Engineers through its next growth phase. You’ll develop the people, set direction across the team’s ML domains, and shape our customers’ experience with AI & ML.
Tricks of the trade
- Grow your team: coaching experienced engineers toward technical leadership and helping junior engineers build independence. Your success is measured by theirs.
- Shape how the team works: how we run experiments, evaluate models, and ship to production. You define the process, not every solution.
- Partner with cross-functional teams, including senior leadership, across product, analytics, and business, to understand user needs and translate them into technical solutions.
- Be a technical leader by challenging architectural decisions, asking the right questions, and leveraging connections between initiatives.
- Shape the vision and roadmap for ML to improve our customers’ experience together with the Product Owner, set and maintain high standards for execution.
- Foster a culture of innovation and contribute to the ML community - through conferences, meetups, and knolwedge exchanges.

We’re looking for
- You have a degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, or a related field.
- You have at least 5 years of relevant technical experience, including building and shipping AI/ML product features, with a strong understanding of modern ML techniques — enough to challenge architecture and know what good looks like.
- You have at least 2 years of experience leading or managing a technical team, with a track record of growing engineers into stronger, more independent contributors.
- You shape how an ML team works — not just what it works on.
- You communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences, and you're comfortable representing your team externally.
- You have strong English skills (no Dutch required).

In a nutshell
You’ll work on building the tools and infrastructure to help our Machine Learning Engineers build and productionize robust machine learning models.
Working closely with ML Engineers, you’ll identify opportunities to improve the machine learning lifecycle at Picnic. From tools that improve model experimentation, to automations that simplify model deployment. You will collaborate with other platform teams at Picnic to make sure our tech stack remains aligned with the rest of the Tech team, while building and integrating the solutions that solve the problems unique to machine learning systems.

Various MLOps-oriented projects to:
- Automate machine learning model retraining and deployment
- Set up infrastructure for model inference, supporting deployment strategies like A/B testing and shadow testing.
- Improve monitoring in order to exercise operational excellence for our machine learning models.
- Simplify and standardize usage of tools by developing and inner-sourcing Python packages
Your contributions to the platform will power:
- Recommendation systems: generating useful in-app grocery suggestions for our customers.
- LLM use cases: automate systems to categorize Customer Success tickets.
- Outlier detection: low-latency decision support systems to prevent fraud.
- Time-series forecasting: improving the operational efficiency throughout our supply chain, from our automated fulfilment center to our last mile delivery.
You will definitely:
- Work closely with ML Engineers to identify opportunities, define use cases, and scope out the requirements
- Own your own project from inception to production
- Experiment with and evaluate new technologies
- Develop tools and enhancements for our ML Platform
We’re looking for
- Master’s degree or higher in AI, Computer Science, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in productionizing machine learning models, preferably using Docker and Kubernetes
- Proven track record of scaling development and adoption of machine learning in an organization
- Strong Python skills
- ...and for bonus points: you have experience with Terraform and working with LLMs

Your superpowers
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Econometrics, Mathematics, Physics or an equivalent quantitative study
- 2-5 years of work experience in a product-led company, ideally experienced with building logistics solutions

- Strong communication skills which allow you to convert abstract plans into concrete actions for your team
