About the Organization

The Cost Optimization team is propelling Stripe to lead in cost-efficient payments, focusing on Bank Debits, Bank Transfers, and Paper Checks, driving savings for businesses while enhancing payment experiences and market innovation.

As an Engineering Manager at Stripe, you will play a pivotal role in driving the success of your team and the broader organization. Your responsibilities will include:

• 5+ years of experience managing and growing teams of engineers.
• Proven track record managing a team of 5+ software engineers focused on building and shipping products at scale.

About the team

The Payments organization focuses on developing products and platforms that enable users to accept payments from customers efficiently, create new payment and payout methods, and utilize their vaulted credentials across the internet. 

The team is looking for an engineering leader that is able to be both technically involved as well as engaged in developing the strategy for the organization and the people.

What you’ll do

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team at the forefront of delivering best-in-class Checkout services that power Elements with CheckoutSession and define and drive our payment integrations into the future. You will work closely with Optimized Checkout teams, playing a critical role in owning the strategy and execution of our core Checkout primitives. Your leadership will ensure we balance rapid innovation with the five-nines reliability required to support the world's largest enterprises and the growing global economy.

This is a role for a strategic leader who excels at navigating complex technical and product challenges. You will drive the evolution of our Checkout services, helping to abstract immense complexity into simple, powerful integrations for our users. Beyond the immediate technical goals, you will be a cultural pillar for the team, mentoring the next generation of technical leaders and shaping an engineering and product vision that defines the future of commerce.

Responsibilities

• Scope, design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and large-scale systems that reliably and efficiently handle billions of money movement requests
• Debug and solve critical production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
• Partner with Engineering Managers to create roadmaps that deliver milestones toward a cohesive engineering vision. 
• Serve as a role model for our high engineering standards and bring consistency to the many codebases and processes you will encounter
• Arbitrate critical decisions correctly that fully consider software best practices, Stripe system realities, and numerous stakeholders’ preferences and concerns
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization such as experts product, design, infrastructure, and operations
• Teach and mentor the next generation of technical leaders at Stripe

• 8+ years of full-time software development experience.

• Experience building extensible software solutions that scale with business growth.

The Payments organization focuses on developing products and platforms that enable users to accept payments from customers efficiently. This includes building APIs for processing payments, enabling regional, non-card payment options, and extending Stripe's capabilities to make it easy for businesses to accept in-person payments. Optimized Checkout and Link teams work to create best-in-class checkout experiences that enhance customer satisfaction and drive merchant conversion rates. The Risk Engineering team develops products that minimize financial and regulatory risks while ensuring a seamless user experience, thereby safeguarding Stripe’s brand and financial stability.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for Backend engineers who want to make an impact on managing money at a global scale with a passion for building ergonomic APIs. You’ll play a key role in extending our balance management platform and in building out a new funds accessibility platform leveraged by enterprises and SMBs alike. Our team collaborates with many cross-functional teams – from Infrastructure to Product –  at Stripe to deliver innovative solutions that address evolving user needs.

Responsibilities

• Scope, design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and large-scale systems that reliably and efficiently handle billions of money movement requests
• Debug and solve critical production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
• Mentor engineers to help them grow
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the company to build new features at large-scale, while improving internal engineering standards, tooling, and processes
• Collaborate effectively in a distributed and hybrid team, maintaining open communication and strong connections with colleagues

Minimum requirements

• 2-12+ years of industry software engineering experience (does not include internships nor includes co-ops)
• Strong coding skills in any programming language (we understand new languages can be learned on the job so our interview process is language agnostic)
• Strong collaboration skills, can work across workstreams within your team and contribute to your peers’ success
• Have the ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy, responsibility, and think of yourself as entrepreneurial
• Interest in working as a generalist across varying technologies and stacks to solve problems and delight both internal and external users

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale financial tracking systems
• Good understanding and practical knowledge in cloud based services (e.g. gRPC, GraphQL, Docker/Kubernetes, cloud services such as AWS, etc.)
