About the team

In this role, you will be joining the High Availability and Disaster Recovery team. At Stripe, availability is a core feature of our products. This team designs and builds new solutions to allow latency-critical, stateful applications to survive any type of disaster. We build distributed systems on top of unreliable architecture to provide highly available and resilient customer solutions. This team is creating greenfield solutions which will serve as the basis for Stripe’s architecture 5, 10, or 20 years into the future.

This is a distributed team with many remote engineers. You are encouraged to apply if you meet the minimum requirements and are able to work from anywhere in the United States or Canada.

What you’ll do

You will help develop our global architecture by combining less-available components and data centers into a highly available and resilient whole. You will work on latency-critical solutions where every millisecond matters and data redundancy is a hard requirement. You will learn quickly and work on a broad range of problems - one day may be investigating Mongo write concerns, the next may be minimizing cross-region TLS handshakes, followed by developing new systems to automate disaster detection and failovers. Your work will enable Stripe to increase the GDP of the internet by providing uptime and data protection which have historically been impossible.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of talented engineers on the team, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to ensure their success.
• Drive the execution of projects, overseeing the entire development lifecycle from planning to delivery, while maintaining high standards of quality and timely completion.
• Help influence peers / managers and build consensus while dealing with ambiguity
• Build your team - formalizing role definitions, defining charter and ownership boundaries and taking a newly formed team into a high-functioning one

Minimum requirements

• 5+ years of engineering management experience, with a proven track record of managing and growing teams of 10+ engineers.
• Deep domain expertise in cloud development or a strong background in building sophisticated infrastructure systems.
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distill complex technical concepts into clear strategic frameworks for peers and executives.
• Experience in rapid-growth environments, specifically a history of successful, high-volume hiring and team scaling.
• Technical proficiency to engage deeply with Staff-level engineers on system architecture, API design, and AI model integration.

Preferred qualifications

• Understanding of distributed system concepts (ex. leader election, voting, quorum)
• Background in high-availability systems, chaos engineering, or disaster recovery design
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and multi-region deployments
• Familiarity with document databases such as MongoDB

About the team

The Developer Infrastructure organization at Stripe is a group of teams responsible for the productivity of all developers at Stripe. Our job is to ensure that Stripe is the most productive place of an engineer's career. 

We support thousands of engineers across the development lifecycle in our primary languages of Ruby, Java, Go, Python and Typescript, we maintain the observability systems that ensure that Stripe maintains its industry leading 99.9995% uptime and we ensure that engineers can maintain a high level of productivity while remaining compliant with many of the important regulations that govern financial services.

What you’ll do

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in defining and driving the evolution of Stripe’s Developer Infrastructure. You’ll make critical decisions that affect the engineer practices of our entire engineering organization. 

You will collaborate with product and infrastructure teams around the company to understand the pain points in their development processes and come up with creative solutions in order to drive up developer satisfaction and overall productivity.

Responsibilities

• Define and design opinionated architectural strategies, policies, and abstractions that build a long term sustainable solution for internal Stripes, that will in turn enhance the experience of millions of Stripe users.
• Collaborate nimbly with cross functional partners (PM), high-visibility teams and their stakeholders to support their key initiatives - navigating various types of organizational complexity with the support of your own leadership team.
• Lead and manage a team of talented engineers on the team, providing technical mentorship, guidance, and support to ensure their success.
• Create and execute strategies to measure engineering productivity and sentiment in order to prioritize the right projects that will have the most impact on productivity at Stripe.
• Developer strategies to effectively deploy AI development strategies (coding assistants and agentic development) across the Stripe organization.

Minimum requirements

• BS or MS in Computer Science or a related field.
• 13+ years of professional experience in a software development or DevOps automation role.
• Experience building systems focussing on developer productivity and tooling (e.g. code review, CI/CD, build systems, version control, IDE, etc).
• Experience leading projects on a cross-team and company-wide scale.
• Experience optimizing the reliability and security of distributed systems.
• Experience mentoring engineers at various stages in their careers.
• Experience developing, maintaining, and debugging distributed systems.
• Experience driving a culture of operational excellence, with a deep understanding of metrics, alerts, and dashboards.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with build systems (Bazel, Gradle, Buck, CMake)
• Experience with AI Development Strategies (Coding Assistants, Agentic Development)
• Experience in a development team that utilizes AWS/Azure/OCI/Google Cloud
• Experience with Kubernetes
• Experience with Terraform

About the team

We are a brand new team, working quickly to accelerate Stripes engineering productivity by effectively deploying LLM agents and tools to automate large swaths of the engineering workflow.  We’re a cross-continent team, spanning North America and Europe, filled with high agency engineers with strong product perspectives.  

What you’ll do

We are looking for a hands-on Manager who can effectively lead and guide a team high agency engineers to move quickly on a rapidly growing tech space. They will help set the product direction in a field with a nearly endless possible solution space. Folks passionate about great products, user experience and with a strong opinion about how engineers do good work will excel in this role. Prior experience with deploying AI developer tools isn’t necessary, but is interesting.  

You will:

• Lead a senior, cross-continent team of engineers to move rapidly to deploy and exploit the latest in AI devtools.
• Deliver compelling user and product experiences for internal users.
• Work across the company to redefine how software engineers at Stripe work. 
• Keep up with an incredibly fast paced technology environment. 
• Dig deep into the data on how engineers use AI tools to seek out every bit of benefit, and help Stripe accelerate.

• Experience Tech leading, mentoring and managing a team that shipped products to engineers.
• Experience building tools and products, ideally for technical audiences - either as internal or external customers.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills for various audiences, including leadership, users, and company-wide.

Minimum Requirements:

• Proven Leadership: Minimum 5 years of experience in a technical engineering management role; overseeing strategic projects.
• Systems Expertise: A deep technical background in distributed systems and experience operating Tier0 infrastructure at massive scale.
• Product Mindset: Ability to bridge deep engineering needs with global business growth forecasts and product strategy, specifically building abstractions that empower thousands of other developers.
• Strategic Navigator: Experience managing through ambiguity and making critical trade-offs between reliability, efficiency, and long-term architectural health.
• Curiosity and Humility: A deep curiosity about the "nuts-and-bolts" of the business (e.g., global money movement) combined with the humility to continue learning and growing as a leader
• Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Scale and Infrastructure: Successfully shipped and operated critical infrastructure (database internals or related field) with significant responsibility over funds and/or critical data

• Cross-Functional Influence: A track record of getting other teams on board with your vision to support execution in a way that benefits the broader company

In-office expectations

In-Office: Stripe is a "Live" culture. You will be expected to spend at least 50% of your time in your local hub to foster high-bandwidth, in-person collaboration.
