Job Summary:
As a Staff Data Analyst at SmithRx, you’ll play a pivotal role on a high-impact Data team, leading through technical excellence, mentoring emerging talent, and delivering insights that accelerate our mission to make healthcare more affordable & accessible. What you will do:
As a Staff Data Analyst you will:
- Establish Data-Driven Business Command
- Partner with technical and business stakeholders to design key business metrics, dashboards, data products, and AI-enabled reporting systems that are widely-adopted and empower data-informed decisions
- Leverage advanced skill to conduct rigorous analyses that reveal root causes, uncover opportunities, forecast outcomes, and drive positive product & business impact
- Transform complex findings into compelling narratives that influence strategic direction
- Champion Trustworthy Data
- Collaborate closely with Data Engineers to influence the design, development, and maintenance of dimensional data models, ensuring data is complete, accurate, and reliably delivered
- Champion world-class data governance practices, continuously raising the bar for data & code quality across technical teams
- Amplify Team Performance
- Partner with stakeholders to align roadmaps with business priorities, influence better problem framing, and model a standard of excellence
- Operate as a force multiplier whose influence fosters growth across the whole Data team, providing incisive technical mentorship, inspiring intellectual curiosity, and driving clarity amidst ambiguity
What you will bring to SmithRx:
- Bachelor’s degree in an analytical field (i.e., STEM) Master’s or Ph.D. degree is preferred
- 8+ years of hands-on experience influencing product and business decision-making through advanced analytical skill
- Healthcare and/or pharmacy experience is preferred
- Advanced technical proficiency, including deep experience:
- Collaborating with Data & Analytics Engineers to architect robust data models and institute world-class data quality guardrails
- Leveraging SQL & dbt to query, transform, and validate complex data sets
- Designing, presenting, and influencing people with data products & visualizations that deliver impactful and actionable insights
- A self-starter mentality, proactively identifying novel ways to drive impact, devising creative solutions to complex challenges, and independently delivering on commitments
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, seamlessly adapting between business and technical audiences
- Proven leadership prowess, including the ability to drive clarity by articulating a compelling vision and bring people along with you

Job Summary:
On the Data Engineering team, we transform streams of data into insights that solve real-world Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) challenges. We empower our Data Analytics and Machine Learning teams to make drug pricing transparent and easy to understand. We deliver business impact by designing, implementing, and maintaining distributed systems to collect, aggregate, and govern pharmaceutical data. We leverage open-source tools like Airflow and DBT built on top of industry-leading data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake), utilize LLMs to optimize workflows, and use Python heavily in our daily work.
What you will do:
Architecture & Technical Strategy
- Define Technical Vision: Define the long-term data engineering strategy guided by company-wide priorities and engineering best practices.
- Design Ecosystems: Create coherent designs across multiple pipelines and API boundaries. Reduce complex concepts to foundational components and simplify infrastructure to lower maintenance costs.
- Drive Engineering Excellence: Make high-impact technical choices—including "build vs. buy" and framework selections— based on sound reasoning. Review designs to preemptively identify and resolve technical risks.
- Improve Developer Efficiency: Implement solutions that measurably improve developer efficiency and establish engineering-wide quality and best practices.
Execution & Business Impact
- Deliver at Scale: Roll out major features and systems reliably, including appropriate monitoring, failure domain characterization, and success metric definitions.
- Align with Business Goals: Leverage a deep understanding of SmithRx’s business strategy to identify group-wide opportunities. Proactively refocus team efforts when projects are off-course or not moving the needle for the business.
- Manage Data Quality & Governance: Enforce data governance policies (PII/PHI protection, security, compliance) and implement data quality principles to raise the bar for the reliability of data shared internally and externally.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Influence Cross-Functionally: Influence the roadmaps of other SmithRx teams. Act thoughtfully and decisively in critical situations, seeking diverse perspectives but ultimately leading decision-making to move priorities forward.
- Mentor and Develop: Serve as a role model and coach for other engineers, taking into account their unique skills and providing constructive feedback to maximize their impact.
- Executive Communication: Develop focused messaging and effectively present technical strategies and business cases at the executive level.
- Champion Organizational Change: Break down silos, build deep cross-functional relationships, and create excitement to drive the adoption of new technologies or processes across the organization.
What you will bring to SmithRx:
- 8+ years of years of industrial experience in data engineering with an advanced degree or 12+ years with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. (Start-up and healthcare experience is highly desirable).
- Demonstrated mastery of data modeling concepts, database design principles, and data warehouse technologies (e.g., Snowflake) through production-grade implementations.
- Strong skills in PySpark, SQL, and Python are required. Experience in modern object-oriented or compiled languages such as C#/C++, Go, Java, or Scala is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with leading ETL tools and frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, dbt, Looker, Superset).
- In-depth experience managing the entire data lifecycle, with direct responsibility for the development, implementation, and production release of complex data processing solutions utilizing distributed systems.
- A proven track record of making decisions optimized for the wider engineering organization rather than locally optimal outcomes, especially in environments with significant ambiguity.

- Improve Developer Efficiency: Continuously look for ways to simplify code and infrastructure. Implement solutions that measurably improve developer efficiency.
Execution & Problem Solving
- Drive Large-Scale Projects: Autonomously define and deliver technical roadmaps for larger projects with cross-team dependencies. Execute against tight deadlines while preemptively identifying and resolving technical risks.
- Unblock the Team: Assess and eliminate the root causes of technical and process barriers. Own your decisions and mistakes, taking action to prevent them in the future and sharing learnings widely.
- Align Technical Output with Business Value: Partner with your manager to define team priorities based on SmithRx’s business strategy. Design clear success metrics for systems and achieve them consistently post-launch.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Break down silos within and across functions. Write crisp narratives to create understanding, get buy-in, and enable effective decision-making among stakeholders.
- Navigate Ambiguity: Act thoughtfully in critical situations. Balance conflicting perspectives, encourage productive debate, and commit to moving key company priorities forward even when making unpopular decisions.

What you will bring to SmithRx:
- 6+ years of industrial experience in software or data engineering. (Start-up and healthcare experience is highly desirable).
- Strong skills in PySpark, SQL, and Python are required. Experience in modern object-oriented or compiled languages such as C#/C++, Go, Java, or Scala is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with leading ETL tools and frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, dbt, Looker, Superset).
