The Production Engineering organization at Pinterest is accountable for ensuring overall Pinterest availability as well as enhancing Engineering teams’ capability to design, build and operate robust systems at scale. We are hiring a Sr. SRE to join our Compute SRE team. This team is responsible for ensuring that all compute workloads run smoothly on Pinterest. We're building the future on kubernetes and our job is to connect it with what Pinterest needs.

Pinterest’s applications and infrastructure that handle billions of monthly page views and petabytes of data as Pinterest continues to grow and scale. As a Pinterest SRE, you will design and build systems, platforms, tools, frameworks and methodologies to assure the reliability of our large-scale distributed systems.

What You’ll Do:

• Tackle project challenges on EKS, such as implementing Karpenter. This work affects how every developer codes, tests, and improves their work
• Collaborate across various teams to drive projects forward using open-source tools
• Build a deep understanding of how Pinterest’s systems behave, scale, interact and fail, and use that insight to identity risks and opportunities for remediation
• Build tools and automation to eliminate toil and reduce operational overhead. Create frameworks, processes and best practices to be used across Pinterest Engineering
• Build meaningful, insightful and actionable SLIs
• Automate critical portions of Pinterest’s engineering processes, to minimize risk and maximize the speed of innovation
• Manage capacity and performance to help scale our infrastructure both on public and private clouds around the world
• Use AI for analysis of incidents, operational signals, and system behaviors to help identify patterns and generate plans and propose remediation approaches.
• Leverage AI to speed development of runbooks, automation workflows, reliability tooling by drafting, iterating, and refining approaches.

What We’re Looking For:

• Strong knowledge of Kubernetes (specially EKS), including deploy patterns, rollout safety, and core debugging workflows
• 4+ years of experience with programming languages (Python or Golang preferred)
• Strong experience managing projects and initiatives end-to-end
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot or Claude for code generation, debugging, and documentation
• Demonstrated ability to write effective prompts to get high-quality, reliable outputs from LLMs
• Demonstrated ability to use AI to improve speed and quality in your day-to-day workflow for relevant outputs.
• Strong track record of critical evaluation and verification of AI-assisted work (e.g., testing, source-checking, data validation, peer review)
• High integrity and ownership: you protect sensitive data, avoid over-reliance on AI, and remain accountable for final decisions and deliverables
• Experience with technologies such as Terraform, Buildkite, and/or ArgoCD is required

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to serve as a technical force multiplier for our Engineering Acceleration organization — a team of 60–80 engineers whose mission is to 10x how fast, and how well, every engineer at Pinterest builds. This is a startup-within-a-company opportunity: the charter is ambitious, the problems are largely unsolved, and the systems you build will define how an entire engineering organization operates for years.

As Principal Engineer for Agentic Engineering, you will architect and ship the foundational platform and capabilities that enables AI agents to operate as integrated participants in Pinterest's software development lifecycle. You will design the agent runtimes, memory systems, orchestration frameworks, evaluation pipelines, and governance models that make it possible for 3,000+ engineers to build alongside AI agents — safely, measurably, and at scale.

This is not a strategy-only or governance-only role. Architecture authority here is earned through production systems, measurable impact, and technical depth. You will write code. You will build reference implementations. You will take the hardest, most ambiguous problems and move them from concepts to operational systems — and in doing so, set the standard for how Engineering Acceleration builds.

You will work without a direct reporting team but with broad organizational authority. The Senior Director of Engineering Acceleration, VP of Engineering, and Chief Architect will look to you as a key technical advisor — a trusted partner and primary delegation point for the hardest technical questions facing this organization. Your instincts will shape hiring bars, investment decisions, and multi-year technical direction.

What you’ll do: 

• Define and drive Pinterest's technical strategy for agentic engineering — building the platform where AI agents write code, review pull requests, debug production incidents, and orchestrate development workflows across 3,000+ engineers
• Architect and ship production systems — modular agent runtimes, persistent memory, multi-agent orchestration (planner, executor, reviewer, tool agents), sandbox isolation, evaluation pipelines, governance (trust boundaries, code generation policies, credential protection, audit trails), and enterprise-grade security
• Reimagine Pinterest's SDLC — transforming coding, testing, reviewing, deploying, and monitoring into an AI-native lifecycle where humans move from "in the loop" to "on the loop"
• Own developer velocity measurement — telemetry, benchmarking, and evaluation systems that track agent quality, reliability, cost, and engineering throughput, building structured feedback loops that compound toward order-of-magnitude velocity gains
• Serve as technical force multiplier across Platform, Infrastructure, and Engineering Acceleration — integrating AI-native workflows with Pinterest's monorepo tooling, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and code quality systems while providing architectural direction, making disciplined build-vs-buy decisions, and setting quality standards through reference implementations
• Drive engineering-wide adoption — through compelling prototypes, reference architectures, technical evangelism, and documentation that makes the abstract concrete
• Build strategic relationships with AI platform vendors — such as Anthropic, OpenAI, AWS, Google and contribute to open-source agentic frameworks to keep Pinterest at the leading edge
• Translate ambiguous business opportunities into precise engineering investments with strong product sensibility — building platforms with the developer experience and adoption characteristics that generate real impact

What we’re looking for:

• 12+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in building developer platforms, internal tooling, or engineering infrastructure that measurably changed how engineers work at scale
• Demonstrated hands-on experience designing and shipping agentic AI systems in production — including knowledge and context engineering, persistent memory architectures, multi-agent orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph), tool integration, and production observability for AI systems
• Experience working in large-scale monorepos or complex multi-service codebases and understanding the unique tooling, navigation, and developer workflow challenges they create
• Familiarity with agentic development best practices — AGENTS.md conventions, skills frameworks, prompt engineering for code agents, and hands-on experience accelerating developer velocity through AI-powered IDEs and local agentic workflows
• Track record of driving sweeping technical change across large engineering organizations (500+ engineers) without direct authority — through compelling vision, high-quality reference implementations, and credibility earned from shipping systems that work
• Deep understanding of modern SDLC tooling and workflows: code review systems, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, static analysis, and the judgment to know how these systems must evolve when AI becomes a first-class participant
• Exceptional cross-functional influence and communication skills — comfortable operating across Security, Infrastructure, Platform, and Product Engineering. Able to handle complex technical conversations at any level, from staff engineers to CTO
• Strong product sensibility and business judgment — ability to convert ambiguous opportunities into precise technical direction, understand developer needs before they're articulated, and build platforms that developers want to adopt

Compute Platform provides the underlying compute capabilities to run jobs and processes for all of the systems and workloads needed behind the scenes to create the best experience for our users and advertisers.  This includes distributed processing, data systems, search, experimentation, monetization, AI/ML for ranking and recommendations, GenAI, and internal systems.

We are looking for a Principal Engineer who can lead and scale the consolidation and modernization of this infrastructure under what we call PinCompute, with an emphasis on some of the largest and most challenging stateful workloads, as well as GPU-heavy AI workloads. The scale and scope of the effort will require designing and building around Kubernetes and solving its scaling limitations, handling stateful systems and data-intensive workloads, formalizing mechanisms to stack and bin pack workloads, working with multiple internal customers and giving them migration paths, and working through ambiguous and unforeseen situations which arise from workload requirements, production and operability requirements, and unique multi-tenancy challenges.

What you'll do:

• Solving the challenges of replacing isolated pools of dedicated compute resources with a very large scale shared compute platform, shifting from machine-based designs to container-based designs.
• Working with leads across various platforms, especially stateful and data platforms, to build the right features and migration paths that work for them.
• Owning and driving up utilization on the shared compute platform by designing and implementing workload stacking, optimizing and bin packing, safe oversubscription, etc.
• Work with multiple customers with unique requirements to make sure the platform will address their needs and is not only a viable but a desirable solution for running their workloads.
• Leading a group of engineers around design topics, execution, trade offs, migration paths, observability, performance, and operability for the platform.
• Evolving the platform towards a multi-cloud abstraction layer to enable running workloads across multiple cloud providers.
• Being a role model for setting a high bar for production quality and engineering excellence in delivering a foundational technology which empowers the entire company.
• Working closely with partners around capacity planning, cost visibility, fungibility of virtual machine instance types, and efficiency.
