Job Description

Olsson is seeking a Commissioning Technical Manager to support our Substation and Power Generation team. This role utilizes advanced commissioning and electrical expertise to serve as an experienced technical resource while developing project management knowledge, skills, and experience. 

This Commissioning Technical Manager will work alongside clients in a staff augmentation capacity. They will work with project managers and technical teams to support commissioning activities, resolve technical challenges, and coordinate schedules and deliverables to ensure operational and safety standards are met. This role performs project management duties on smaller portions or phases of larger projects and does not serve as a firmwide technical authority. 

What You’ll Do 

• Follow safety protocols and practice site-specific safety procedures at all times. 
• Serve as an experienced commissioning technical resource, applying field‑based knowledge to support project execution and problem‑solving.
• Collaborate with technical staff and project managers to support development of project scopes, schedules, and objectives.
• Required to Generate Commissioning Documentation regarding appropriate energization sequences, switching instructions, system isolation documentation, commissioning testing plans, commissioning test results.
• Required to compile and submit results, field drawing redlines, review redlines for accuracy, ensure all associated drawings affected by redlines are notated and submitted to engineering teams.
• Apply commissioning and electrical experience to assist with cost estimates and project budgeting.

The Engineer‑Project Manager serves as both a technical leader and project manager, guiding design decisions, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and managing scope, schedule, and budget. This role emphasizes technical fluency combined with strong project leadership to support the successful delivery of complex power infrastructure projects. 

What You’ll Do 

• Lead the delivery of complex substation and power generation projects from planning through completion.
• Serve as the technical point of coordination on assigned projects, guiding design approach, reviewing technical content, and contributing directly to design as needed.

You’ll lead designs from concept through construction, partnering with clients, utilities, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver well‑coordinated, buildable infrastructure.

• Lead Physical Substation Design: Develop physical designs for high‑voltage substations and switching stations, including layouts, equipment arrangement, bus configurations, grounding, and site coordination—applying utility standards and industry codes to ensure safe, reliable, and constructible solutions.
• Project Leadership from Concept to Construction: Lead projects through planning, detailed design, and construction support, ensuring constructability, coordination, and schedule alignment through installation and commissioning.
• Client & Utility Collaboration: Partner with data center owners, developers, and utilities to define requirements and deliver power solutions that meet uptime, capacity, and future growth needs.
• Multidisciplinary Coordination: Work closely with protection & controls, transmission, distribution, civil, and structural teams to deliver fully integrated designs and provide technical leadership within project teams.
