The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO’s System & Resource Planning department invites applications for a full-time Planning Engineer, Transmission Integration.
The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct engineering studies evaluating the reliability, economic, and regulatory impacts of transmission projects on the New York transmission system. Analyses performed by Planning Engineers support transmission infrastructure development in New York State to meet public policy needs, including New York State’s climate-based goal of a 100% CO2-free electric system by 2040.
Planning Engineers will participate in planning activities with neighboring control areas, market participant committees, the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC) New York State Reliability Council (NYSRC), and Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative (EIPC).

Analyses performed by Reliability Studies Engineers support reliability compliance and transmission infrastructure development throughout the New York bulk power system.
This position will also support the parent System Planning Department which provides transmission related engineering studies, models and database information, to stakeholders, including market participant committees, the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS), the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC), the New York State Reliability Council (NYSRC), and Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative (EIPC).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering, Economics or related technical field required; Master’s degree (MS) desired. Course studies related to power system operation, control, and particularly transmission planning and dynamic stability highly desired.
EXPERIENCE
Five to seven years of experience in the areas of power system planning or design of transmission system facilities or generation facilities preferred. Experience with computer programs used in analytical power engineering system studies, e.g., power-flow, short circuit, and/or transient stability as well as experience with models and databases used in analytical power engineering system studies needed. Knowledge of NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC reliability standards and practices related to power system planning and design especially transmission planning and design desired, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Ability to develop scripting (e.g. using Python or other programming tools) to perform power system analysis, manage/manipulate/report data and support continuous improvement of power system study practices is desired.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The NYISO’s Interconnection Studies department invites applications for a full-time Senior Planning Engineer.
The Senior Planning Engineer coordinates, performs and reviews technical studies related to the interconnection of proposed new generation, transmission and load facilities to the New York State transmission system. Also coordinates with other SRP and NYISO departments as necessary to prepare various reports and filings as appropriate. Will respond to customer, regulator or other outside inquiries as appropriate and assists in development or review of new or modified documents such as tariffs, manuals, reliability standards, etc. as appropriate. Generally, a Senior Planning Engineer provides high level technical guidance to other System and Resource Planning staff or other departments as necessary.
