ML Operations is where data becomes decisions. We sit at the intersection of Autonomy Engineering and the globally distributed annotation teams who label the world our vehicles need to understand. We are builders, diagnosticians, and systems thinkers who care deeply about the end product - because we know that what we fix here shows up on the road.
This team is collaborative and technically rigorous. We work closely with engineering and we hold each other to a high standard, but we also invest in getting things right together. Here is what the work actually looks like day-to-day:
- Investigate annotation faults by querying databases directly to identify root causes, moving beyond reliance on ticket queues for initial troubleshooting.
- Sitting with Autonomy Engineering leadership, translating a model accuracy regression into a specific labeling workflow problem and walking in with the fix already scoped.
- Auditing a live pipeline, spotting a systematic edge-case misclassification that has been silently propagating, and building the evidence-based case to restructure how that object type gets labeled.
- Manage the processes for quality management/processes for the offshore annotation team
- Being the bridge: the person ML Operations leans on for quality diagnostics, and the person Engineering trusts to understand how a labeling decision upstream shapes what the model learns downstream.

About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to own something that genuinely matters. You will co-own a portfolio of active labeling pipelines alongside senior leadership with real authority to set the quality standard, measure against it, and close the gaps. Not to report on pipelines. To make them better.
The work connects directly to Nuro's mission. A single systematic flaw in annotation can propagate silently through training and surface as a safety regression on the road. You are the person who finds it before that happens and who builds the systems that prevent it from happening again. That kind of upstream impact is hard to find in most roles. About the Work
You will own the quality diagnostic layer across our labeling pipelines: defining the standard, building the instrumentation, and closing the gaps that matter most to model safety and performance.
Own the Quality Standard
- Define what 'good' looks like for each data type across active labeling pipelines and instrument pipelines to measure against it continuously, not just at delivery milestones.
- Build inter-annotator agreement frameworks, taxonomy governance, and sampling methodologies that hold up at offshore production scale.
- Design scalable processes to reduce systematic errors and support evolving ML training requirements.
Diagnose and Close Gaps
- Audit live workflows, query production databases, and trace accuracy failures to their structural root cause then return with an evidence-based plan that fixes the mechanism, not just the symptom.
- Apply statistical process control thinking to distinguish a labeling error from a labeling system error, and drive the changes that address it.
Bridge Engineering and Machine Learning Operations
- Connect ML labeling quality metrics directly to model performance and safety outcomes in close partnership with Autonomy Engineering leadership.
- Build executive-ready reporting that frames quality gaps as safety and business signals — not operational updates.
- Drive alignment across engineering, product, and global ops with clear analysis and well-reasoned recommendations.
About You
We are not looking for someone who has done everything. What You Bring
- 5+ years embedded with ML, data operations, or software engineering teams close to the work, not managing from a distance.
- SQL fluency: you can investigate a labeling anomaly yourself, form a hypothesis, and test it without waiting on a data engineer.
- Deep experience with ML data pipelines and labeling ecosystems annotation workflows, quality sampling, taxonomy design, and inter-annotator agreement.
- A systems-level mindset: you identify where quality breaks down structurally and design the mechanism that fixes it, not just the process that patches it.
- Clear, confident communication: you can translate a nuanced data quality finding into a precise safety or business risk that senior leadership can act on.
- Experience managing large-scale offshore or globally distributed annotation teams.

- Background in autonomous vehicles, robotics, computer vision, or ML model training.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $120,270 and $180,410 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.

You do not set quality standards or own product decisions. You apply defined criteria consistently, document what you find accurately, and escalate when something is outside your scope. Precision, reproducibility, and consistency matter more than speed.
About the Work
Quality Review of Data Annotation
- Review annotated datasets and labeling outputs for quality and consistency across robotics and autonomy workflows
- Apply defined QC criteria and rubrics to evaluate outputs as pass, fail, or needs review
- Document specific defect types per task — incorrect output, regression, edge-case failure, data inconsistency, tool behavior deviation
- Maintain a clean review log for every item assessed — no undocumented assessments
Tool Testing & Bug Reproduction
- Test internal tools across standard workflows and exception scenarios as directed by the Operations Lead
- Reproduce reported bugs reliably and validate fixes with clear supporting documentation — steps, inputs, expected vs. actual behavior
- Confirm test parameters and scope before each cycle and flag discrepancies
- Track test coverage across tools, workflows, and edge cases
Reporting
- Submit completed QC and testing logs on the agreed cadence
- Flag urgent or high-severity defects same-day — do not wait for the regular report
- Write clear, specific defect notes — exact descriptions of what failed, reproduction steps, and impact, not vague feedback
Escalation & Process Improvement
- Escalate any case where the rubric or test plan is ambiguous or does not cover the scenario — do not guess
- Flag patterns you notice across multiple items — recurring defects, systemic issues, documentation gaps
- Help improve QC processes, testing methods, and internal documentation through structured feedback to the Operations Lead
- Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to communicate findings and support prioritization — all formal feedback routes through the Operations Lead
About You
- 1–3 years of experience in QA, software testing, operations, content review, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated ability to apply rubrics or evaluation criteria consistently across high volumes of work
- High attention to detail and strong problem-solving ability — you catch things others miss and document them precisely

On the Autonomy Visualization team, your top priority will be developing high-quality visualization platforms. These platforms will allow any software engineer to add new viz elements. Additionally, you’ll also have the opportunity to work end-to-end on viz features and products, exercising both your technical skills, product sense, and cross-functional communication.
About the Work
As an Autonomy Visualization Software Engineer, you’ll build business-critical tools that accelerate the development of Nuro’s autonomous driving technology.
- Build performant visualization frameworks in both C++ / OpenGL and Unity to serve multiple critical functions like autonomy development and validation, triage tools, and in-car visualization.
- Be a partner to Autonomy engineers as they seek to improve their development workflow with better visualization.
- Collaborate with ML Labeling teams, as they seek to gather high-quality training data with bespoke labeling tools.
- Interface with product managers and designers to build polished visualizations for external applications that represent Nuro well.
About You
- You have 1+ years of software development experience in C++, OpenGL and QT
- You have a basic understanding of graphics concepts (e.g., rendering pipelines, shaders, coordinate systems).
- Prior experience with visualization apps or game engines (OpenGL, Vulkan, Unity, Unreal)
- You’re deeply technical: you enjoy working through thorny performance problems in low-level code, and working with advanced language features.

About the Role
As the Autonomous Driving System Safety Lead on the Systems Engineering team, you will own and author safety claims in the forward-facing ADS safety case for onboard and offboard software, a large fraction of which is AI components. You will work closely with the autonomy software, data platform, operations, and legal teams to coordinate system requirements, AI architecture, and evidence in support of these claims. You will be responsible for ensuring that the cross-functional team creates a safety case for onboard and offboard software that is comprehensive and that potential gaps are identified and mitigated.
About the Work
- Manage safety claims by understanding the ADS design, interfaces, and technical capabilities of the system and by working closely with Autonomy Robotics and Software Infrastructure leads.
- Generate atomic claims through claim decomposition, delegating to the cross-functional teams where appropriate and managing quality where delegated.
- Generate counter-arguments (challenges) to claims, and ensure that they are either addressed or mitigated.
- Review and assess evidence from evaluation and validation as arguments for safety case claims, and by working closely with V&V test teams.
- Develop processes for and coordinate the tracking of safety performance indicators, as available from various Systems Engineering and Software Evaluation teams, to monitor driverless (driver-out L4) deployment.

About The Role
As a Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Fault Response Verification, you will work very closely with the Autonomy development, eval infrastructure, and data science teams. You will partner closely with our Autonomy software engineering team to define system-level behavior requirements when a fault is present, implement metrics to assess requirement violations, build novel validation tooling and pipelines to achieve integration into our Safety Case and risk assessment frameworks, and contribute to risk quantification. The mandate of the prediction team is to use advanced machine learning techniques to improve the behavior of the Nuro Driver.
As a key member of the Prediction and Smart Agents team, you will focus on building state-of-the-art models for predicting the behavior of surrounding traffic. These models are crucial for our autonomous system, as they will be deployed onboard as part of our planning stack and used offboard for realistic closed-loop simulation.
You will explore novel machine learning methods to solve challenging real-world problems in autonomous driving. This work includes using generative sequence modeling approaches for robustly predicting complex, interactive traffic situations. It requires deep reasoning about the intentions of other road users and how their behaviors influence safe and correct driving decisions. You will also use different input modalities, including End-to-End (E2E) approaches, for predicting other agents. About the Role
The Senior Systems Test Engineer (STE), Autonomy Behavior role is responsible for transforming Nuro's Verification & Validation (V&V) ecosystem. You will focus on the technical implementation, standardization, and automation of V&V processes. This involves creating a unified, automated architecture for validation , designing and managing streamlined triage workflows , and continuously improving the testing pipelines to drive informed, data-driven autonomy development. Your work is key to proving the system's safety by generating test results that support the Autonomy Safety Case.
About the Work
The STE role involves hands-on technical work to design, align, structure, and continuously improve automated test pipelines and workflows:
- Design and implement automated test pipelines and tooling, ensuring easy adoption and minimal friction for Systems engineers.
- Drive standardization across all testing modalities by designing, implementing, and managing unified triage workflows across all workstreams.
- Establish a continuous feedback loop to improve V&V processes, specifically by leading root cause analyses and identifying testing gaps with Systems engineers.
- Turn identified system and pipeline gaps into concrete technical requests for partner teams (e.g., Data Platform, Simulation, Infra).
- Collaborate on and validate implemented solutions with partner teams, providing technical guidance, code review, and documentation to ensure solutions are scalable and meet the needs of Systems engineers.
About You
- 5+ years of technical work experience in a relevant area with 3+ years of experience with testing of autonomous vehicles/robotic systems.
- Hands-on software experience with the ability to code in Python or C++ for automation and tooling development.
- Experience in designing, implementing, and managing large scale simulation or test automation pipelines.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering concepts related to autonomy architecture, particularly how sensing, perception, prediction, and planning modules interact.
- Highly collaborative, with strong abilities to think and communicate analytically to drive cross-functional projects and provide technical guidance to partner teams like Simulation and Data Platform.
Bonus Points
- Experience with large scale simulation, or behavior verification, or Fault detection and Response testing for L2+ autonomous systems.
- Prior experience in defining and implementing triage prioritization strategies and workflows.
- Familiarity with linking test results as evidence to support the Autonomy safety case.
- Experience implementing testing pipelines, validation tooling, and triage workflows for complex projects.
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $176,400 and $264,600 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
