We identify high-value sites, work with landowners and local communities to develop them, and partner with long-term asset owners to bring the most impactful clean energy projects to life.
New Leaf Energy seeks a Civil Project Engineer I. We are currently only considering internal applicants. In this role, you will work with a team of engineers, project developers, and engineering consultants to review, design, and permit prospective solar PV, wind, and energy storage projects. Our successful candidate will be relied on to balance due diligence efforts with project risks for the continued development of projects for New Leaf Energy.
This position may be filled out of our Boston, MA, Lowell, MA, Chicago, IL, and Troy, NY, or Oakland, CA offices. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and are free to work from the office or home on other days. Remote candidates who meet the qualifications are also encouraged to apply; internal candidates with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
- Design, direct, and manage concurrent projects using either internal or external resources. Lead site review, zoning/bylaws review, and outline project entitlement path.
- Apply NLE’s Value Stream Map (VSM) to advance a project through design and entitlement.
- Assist in identifying, qualifying and onboarding surveyors and consultants for project design and entitlement. Use project scheduling, task-management, KPI, QC, and other tools to ensure standards adherence, design quality and timeliness.
- Work with the state agencies, towns, and other stakeholders, as well as present to planning/zoning boards, state, and federal agencies.
- Assisting in the continued development of standard details, notes, specifications and SOPs.
- Reviewing design drawings prepared by in-house or external designers.
- Prepare the civil engineering components of project bid sets that will be used for the IPP bidding process.
- Respond to bidder permitting questions and participate in due diligence calls with project bidders.
Desired Qualifications

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering.
- On track to obtain Civil P.E. license
- 4–8 years’ experience in site development, entitlement, and environmental permitting (municipal, state, federal).
- Solar PV or energy storage experience desired.
- Experience in cost estimation, reviewing engineering services contracts, managing subconsultants and project schedule management.
- AutoCAD Civil 3D and HYDROCAD (or equivalent design tools) proficiency.
- Able to communicate design concepts and lead meetings between clients, engineers, regulatory officials, and consultants.
- Able to manage multiple projects while being highly motivated, detailed, and organized.
- Passionate about renewable sources of energy.
Compensation
New Leaf Energy compensates all employees in three ways: market-competitive base salary, plus above-market variable compensation, plus an equity-like program such that all employees experience the benefits of ownership. We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.
Under our compensation framework, the likely base salary range for this position is $113,980 - 129,660. The on-target annual cash bonus associated with this position is an additional 10% percent of base salary. Your actual salary may be above, in, or below this range, depending on your location and experience. Our office locations in Lowell, Boston, Oakland, and Chicago all carry geography-based upward adjustments to the base pay range.

New Leaf Energy, Inc. is seeking civil/environmental engineering juniors and seniors for Intern roles on our Civil Engineering team. The Civil Engineer Intern will work with a team of engineers to assist in reviewing and designing renewable energy projects (solar PV, energy storage, wind).
This internship can be filled from our Lowell, MA office We are offering a summer 2026 internship timeline.
We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Interns will work in-office weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Primary duties will include but not limited to assisting in:
- Site due diligence and research of bylaws;
- Creation of plan sets (CAD);
- Site civil and stormwater design;
- Permit applications;
- General project support tasks.
Requirements
