Position Summary:

Serves as the relationship manager responsible for managing all financial reporting aspects for a portfolio of chapters that have elected to use Shared Financial Services (SFS) including preparing monthly financial statements, reconciling and analyzing various accounts, and preparing or reviewing financial documentation. The Accounting Manager will work to provide strong customer service to chapters, guide and create internal improvements, and serve as a leader of both people and initiatives within the department. This position will interact with individuals on all levels within the organization and prepare financial documentation that will be used by chapter senior leadership, including chapters' Board of Directors.

Knowledge and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of financial accounting including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial statement preparation to ensure accurate, efficient, timely financial reporting and related processes.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills to network with other departments within the organization, as well as externally with chapter personnel and the chapter’s Board of Directors, regarding various issues related to the financial reporting process.
• Excellent knowledge of internal and management control systems.
• Familiarity with audit planning processes and procedures.
• Excellent knowledge of accounting and information systems applications, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of trust and confidentiality and possess strong business ethics.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Leads and manages member(s) of the accounting team which includes setting expectations, providing feedback, managing workload, ensuring consistent response times and delivery of results. Serves as advisor to SFS team in accounting practices and leadership development.
• Manages and oversees chapter’s financial needs including bank/investment reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and the creation/approval of journal entries.
• Reviews internal and external financial statements, ensuring monthly close is accurate and timely, as well as confirming all variances have been documented and explained.
• Monitors chapter performance against budget and national benchmarking metrics informing chapter leadership of significant variances.
• Monitors chapter’s accounting activity to ensure appropriate recording of revenue and payments agrees to both GAAP and MAW policies.
• Works with the Salesforce system to ensure appropriate coding and reporting of chapter revenue streams.
• Serves as primary liaison, building and maintaining relationships, with assigned portfolio of chapters. Provides reports, queries, and analysis to chapters for account activity, revenue, expenses, etc.
• Assists chapter in preparation of annual budget.
• Acts as key staff person in annual internal and external audit process communicating with National Office, Chapters, and external auditors.
• Facilitates review and evaluation of time and use studies used in allocating the indirect costs of the chapters.
• Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field or equivalent experience required.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting and/or financial reporting required. Nonprofit accounting experience is strongly preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of people leadership experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required, including demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Excel
• Experience in Salesforce and NetSuite is strongly preferred.
• CPA designation a bonus.
• Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is helpful.

Position Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior leader responsible for the financial strategy, governance, operational effectiveness, and enterprise performance of the organization. This role provides organization-wide oversight of financial planning, accounting, investment management, risk mitigation, and shared financial services. The CFO also serves as a strategic partner in driving organizational process improvement and enterprise-wide change management initiatives to strengthen efficiency, alignment, and long-term sustainability.

The CFO reports to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), is a member of the senior leadership team and partners closely with executives and Board-level committees. This role plays a central part in advancing fiscal stewardship, operational excellence, and strategic alignment across the national organization and chapter network, while also contributing to the development and execution of the organization’s enterprise strategic plan.

Success in this position requires extensive experience partnering with Board committees, leading in complex nonprofit or corporate environments, driving process transformation, influencing stakeholders within a distributed shared services model, and effectively managing hybrid and remote teams.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Lead the organization’s financial strategy, planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Oversee all accounting operations, including financial reporting, treasury, and investment management.
• Direct governance, compliance, audit processes, and risk management systems across the enterprise.
• Provide financial leadership and guidance to Board-level committees.
• Ensure excellence, quality, and alignment across chapter-facing shared financial services.
• Lead and develop a high-performing Finance & Operations team.
• Lead enterprise process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, reduce complexity, and strengthen cross-departmental alignment.
• Oversee organizational change management strategies to support smooth adoption of new systems, processes, and operating models.
• Act as a key partner in the development, execution, and tracking of the enterprise strategic plan.
• Champion strong internal controls, accurate financial reporting, and mission‑aligned financial practices.

Key Functional Responsibilities Include the Following

Financial Strategy & Operations

• Lead the development and management of the annual operating and capital budgets.
• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including forecasts and investment reports.
• Manage treasury operations, cash flow, and credit relationships.
• Direct investment strategy and financial risk management.
• Manages the development of business cases for potential areas of investment

Governance, Audit & Compliance

• Serve as staff liaison to the Audit and Finance Committee and present regularly to Board committees.
• Oversee the timely completion of the National Office external audit and IRS Form 990.
• Lead the combined national audit and collaborate with chapters and external audit firms.
• Ensure compliance with all statutory filings across states and municipalities.
• Maintain and strengthen internal control and management control systems.

Shared Financial Services & Chapter Support

• Oversee shared financial services, including chapter accounting, audit support, donor care, and Form 990 preparation.
• Influence and support chapters in aligning financial practices with enterprise standards.
• Provide financial guidance and resources to chapter leadership as needed.

Systems, Reporting & Infrastructure

• Direct the implementation and ongoing management of NetSuite for the national office and chapters.
• Oversee accounting system integration, reporting accuracy, and continuous improvement.
• Ensure proper tracking and reporting of donor restricted funds and grant programs.

Facilities & Operational Oversight

• Evaluate and negotiate tenant leases at foundation headquarters.
• Oversee planning for tenant improvements, renewals, and relocations.
• Manage the organization’s corporate P card and Wish card programs.

Additional Duties

• Provide financial analysis, reporting, and strategic support to all National Office functions.
• Deliver accounting and risk management training to national and chapter staff as needed.
• Maintain relationships with regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and external partners.
• Participate as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to enterprise-wide planning.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational effectiveness.
• Serves as a key member of the Retirement Committee to provide oversight, governance and strategic direction.

• Commit donation batches to Salesforce and post to NetSuite (financial system), the general ledger.
• Review of check requests for proper coding and approvals.
• Prepare bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations for review.
• Records journal entries for monthly financial activity.
• Prepare financial reporting package including monthly variance report.
• Reviews, researches, and analyzes data. Responds to inquiries from chapter staff.
• Assist with gathering of information and documents for annual audit process. Helps prepare chapter’s audit workbooks.
• Assist with running custom reports and queries in NetSuite, and/or Excel, as requested.
• Builds and maintains relationships with chapters.
• Provides support for Support Team Staff.
• Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience, required.
• Minimal experience in accounting and/or financial reporting is acceptable with a related educational degree. Experience in excess of one year is helpful.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required, including demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience in Salesforce and NetSuite is helpful.
• Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations strongly preferred.
